Lyndon B. Johnson once said, nothing comes free. Nothing. Not even good, especially not good. Almost every marketer's favorite and the best - OpenAI has taken this saying too seriously. On 29th January 2023, OpenAI hinted at a paid product version. It is moving towards charging for a more sophisticated version of its popular ChatGPT bot.

Recently, OpenAI was in the headlines as Microsoft's multibillion-dollar investment in its technology. Now, this tool has floated plans for a subscription option called 'ChatGPT Professional', which would offer better access at a cost, leaving the users worried about how much longer they can count on it staying free.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, had already indicated the day was coming, quoting they'd have to 'monetize it somehow'. In December, Sam Altman had signaled that such an option could be in the works and tweeted, "we will have to monetize it somehow at some point; the compute costs are eye-watering." The evolution toward paid versions is a common scenario for newer technologies like ChatGPT, where companies may release free or low-cost versions to attract users and scale adoption.

Jonathan Zhang, Associate Professor of Marketing at Colorado State University, stated, "The rationale is they have to make these things attractive to change consumer behavior." He further continued, "as these things become more a part of the habit, those strong discounts tend to disappear." Some marketing experts give an example of Dropbox, which offers paid plans and a free version, which might provide a sense of how companies like OpenAI may think about their products.

Business Insider tried to seek a reply from OpenAI representatives but they have yet to respond to its request for comment ahead of publication. Predictions are that Microsoft's investment in OpenAI could also assist in developing more extensive and specialized versions of ChatGPT that could help the startup come up with better alternatives.

We look forward to knowing how this tool will get sophisticated with time. How much will it charge its users? Are you excited too? Let us know in the comment section.
