Way back on July 17, 1995, Disneyland opened the doors of its 160-acre, $17 million theme park to consumers of its animated films and cartoons.

The concept, which celebrated beloved characters and stories produced by the famous Walt Disney and his production house, drew in fans in droves and garnered tremendous profits.

Dubbed “The Happiest Place On Earth”, Disneyland’s success saw the company follow up its novel theme park with Disney World in Florida, which opened in 1971 and was eventually called “The Most Magical Place On Earth”.

Of course, other production companies have moved in similar directions, including giants such as Universal Studios (1964), Warner Bros. (1972) and more, which came in with studio tours, merchandise stores, themed restaurants, theme parks and more.

Now, Netflix, the media and entertainment giant of the current era, is looking to make a similar move by allowing fans to enjoy its properties through a theme park-like experience called Netflix House.

So, what’s Netflix House about and what does it offer its fans? Let’s explore!

What Is Netflix House?

  • “Netflix House will let you experience your favorite shows and movies in real life” is how Netflix began its news release announcing its latest concept idea, which included a video.

  • The plan is to offer its consumers and fans of its shows a year-round home “to live the stories they love” through an experiential entertainment venue.

  • This will include “rotating” immersive experiences that allow fans to explore their favorite Netflix stories and characters beyond the screen, as well as enjoy exclusive merchandise, food and beverages and more.

  • The idea builds on previous Netflix live experiences TV shows such as Bridgerton, Money Heist, Stranger Things, Squid Game, Knives Out, Army of the Dead, Our Planet and more but will go one step further in creating unforgettable experiences.

  • The first two Netflix Houses are scheduled to open in 2025 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania and Galleria Dallas, locations chosen as they are two of the most popular shopping centers in the country.

  • These locations see hundreds of retailers, high foot traffic and are close to major cities.

  • The Netflix Houses will replace former department stores and will sprawl across over 100,000 square feet and will feature “eye-popping sculptures and a mural mash-up of characters” outside the stores.

  • Netflix also launched a website for Netflix House, where fans can sign up for sneak peeks, exclusive content, latest news and “a chance to experience Netflix House before the doors officially open.”

How Did Netflix Describe Netflix Houses?

  • “Imagine waltzing with your partner to an orchestral cover of a Taylor Swift song on a replica of the Bridgerton set –– and then walking around the corner to compete in the Glass Bridge challenge from Squid Game.”

  • “After pretending to fight for your life, you’ve worked up an appetite and want to get a bite.”

  • “You see a nearby restaurant with food inspired by Netflix shows from around the world; the meal is memorable, but you still want to buy some Stranger Things merch. Luckily, there’s a shop that sells that Hellfire Club T-shirt you’ve always wanted.”

What Did Netflix Officials Say About Netflix House?

  • Marian Lee, Netflix’s Chief Marketing Officer, said, “At Netflix House, you can enjoy regularly updated immersive experiences, indulge in retail therapy, and get a taste — literally — of your favorite Netflix series and films through unique food and drink offerings.”

  • [Contd.] “We’ve launched more than 50 experiences in 25 cities, and Netflix House represents the next generation of our distinctive offerings. The venues will bring our beloved stories to life in new, ever-changing, and unexpected ways.”

Do you think this move will enable Netflix to grow its consumer base? Do you think other streaming platforms and production houses should consider making similar moves?
