Microsoft Shuts Down Outlook Lite To Build More Capable AI Tools!

As companies continue to streamline their products, there’s a clear pattern of simplifying what no longer fits and investing in what drives the future. For many tech giants, that future is increasingly tied to AI, automation, and tools that can do more than just assist. Well, this is exactly how Microsoft is making that shift visible on two fronts.

TL;DR

  • Microsoft will shut down Outlook Lite on May 26.
  • Users will need to switch to Outlook Mobile to keep accessing their emails and data.
  • Microsoft is also building an OpenClaw-like AI agent in Copilot that can take actions and handle tasks in the background.

Microsoft is making that shift visible on two fronts. The company has confirmed it will shut down Outlook Lite on May 26. Originally launched in 2022, the app was designed for Android users with limited storage and slower internet connections. It had already been slated for removal from the Google Play Store in October 2025, but now existing users will also lose access.

“To continue enjoying a secure and feature-rich email experience, we recommend switching to Outlook Mobile,” Microsoft mentioned in an Outlook Lite support page.

Users will still be able to access their emails, calendar items, and attachments by signing into Outlook Mobile, with the company directing them to download the full version via the Play Store.

At the same time, Microsoft is building further into AI. The company is testing new agent-like features within Microsoft 365 Copilot, aimed primarily at enterprise users. These features are being positioned as more secure and controlled alternatives to tools like OpenClaw, which run locally and can perform tasks on a user’s behalf.

This move builds on Microsoft’s recent AI efforts. In March, it introduced Copilot Cowork, designed to take actions across Microsoft 365 apps using its “Work IQ” system. The company also brought in Anthropic’s Claude model as an option for powering these experiences. Earlier, it launched Copilot Tasks in preview, targeting users who want help managing both work-related and personal activities.

However, most of these tools currently operate in the cloud. What sets this upcoming agent apart is the possibility of it working continuously in the background, handling multi-step tasks over time. Microsoft has indicated that the goal is to create a version of Copilot that is always active and capable of taking action when needed. While details are still limited, the company is expected to showcase more at its Build conference in June.
