Meta’s Threads, Flipboard And Other Social Media Giants Step Into The Fediverse!

Sounds too good to be true? Well, the fediverse is turning this imagination into reality!
Wait, wait, what is the fediverse? It’s a digital realm that allows social media users to connect and communicate with users from other social media platforms.
Stepping into this new era of social connectivity is Instagram, under its parent company Meta. This move to the fediverse aims to break barriers between different social networking platforms, allowing users more freedom and reach than ever before.
In a recent announcement, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Meta's testing phase for integrating Threads posts onto Mastodon and other ActivityPub-supported networks.
“Making Threads interoperable will give people more choice over how they interact and it will help content reach more people. I’m pretty optimistic about this," Mark said on Meta's Threads. Zuckerberg also expressed enthusiasm about the possibilities this integration brings, emphasizing the expanded choices for interaction and wider content reach.
Now let’s see how Thread’s integration into the fediverse works:
-
Well, recently Instagram announced Thread’s integration into the fediverse as an open social network of different servers. Threads will be using a protocol called ActivityPub to communicate with other servers that support the same protocol.
-
Shortly after the announcement, users discovered they could follow Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, through various Mastodon clients, though his posts remained invisible. Despite this, the ability to search for Mosseri's Threads profile on Mastodon signals a step toward broader access to Threads profiles in the future.
-
Moreover, Meta is planning a bigger leap into Threads interoperability which Mosseri says will take “the better part of a year".
-
The roadmap for Threads' integration with ActivityPub leaves questions about cross-posting between platforms and data transfer unanswered. Initially, Threads didn't integrate with the fediverse at its launch but the commitment to incorporating ActivityPub persisted.
-
In a recent thread shared by the Instagram Head, Adam Mosseri, he outlined the plans for Threads' integration with the fediverse. These plans include enabling all public Threads accounts for cross-platform following and allowing replies from other platforms to appear within Threads.
- Moreover, Threads aims to support following non-Threads fediverse accounts and eventually facilitate follower portability for creators to switch platforms while retaining their audience.
Here comes the twist! Instagram Threads isn't the only player embracing decentralized social networking. So, who’s the latest to take the plunge?
-
Flipboard, the popular social magazine app, has also stepped into the fediverse by integrating with ActivityPub.
-
Initially, select Flipboard accounts could be discovered and followed by users of decentralized social apps, with plans to expand this across all Flipboard profiles.
-
Flipboard's move comes after setting up its own Mastodon server and experimenting with Mastodon integration earlier this year. This shift was prompted by changes in Twitter's policies that led Flipboard to explore alternatives like Mastodon and Bluesky for curating news content.
Well, with these advancements, the boundaries between social platforms are blurring, offering users a more connected and expansive social experience than ever before!
Do you think the fediverse will open gates to a new era in the social media realm?
