Meta’s Move To Protect Young Social Media Bees!
Updated on Thu, Jun 29, 2023
The latest report says Meta, the company behind popular social platforms like Facebook and Instagram, is making significant strides in ensuring the safety and well-being of its young users. The reason? Well, in response to mounting concerns and increased scrutiny from lawmakers, Meta has announced a range of innovative safeguards and monitoring tools specifically designed for teenagers.
To begin with, Messenger, Meta's instant messaging app, is introducing parental control features, following in the footsteps of Instagram. The same report says now, parents and guardians can keep a close eye on their teens' activities, including the amount of time they spend chatting and their contacts list, as well as receiving notifications if their teen reports someone. It will empower the guardians to keep a close eye on the children’s online behavior!
"We heard from parents and teens about the value they're seeing from how a two-way dialogue can foster and encourage discussions," said Diana Williams, who oversees product changes for youth and families at Meta said, in an interview.
On the other hand, The Wall Street Journal report from May 2023 highlighted that social media possess a "profound risk of harm" to young people's mental health. According to the report, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy warned about the potential risks of social media to young people. He further urged policymakers and technology companies to strengthen the standards of adolescents.
The report further said, "There are ample indicators that social media can also have a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents." "We are in the middle of a national youth mental health crisis, and I am concerned that social media is an important driver of that crisis—one that we must urgently address," Murthy said.
Besides, Statista projected that as of January 2023, almost 39 percent of global Instagram users were a young audience between 13 to 24 years. #Millenials
Meanwhile, recognizing the negative impact on sleep and mental well-being, Instagram is addressing the issue of excessive scrolling during nighttime hours by adding features that remind users to take a break. This move by Meta demonstrates the company's commitment to the well-being of its young users and their families.
