Of course, we did!
That's the magic of Tom Hanks – from charming us with his voice in Toy Story to his stunning performance in The Da Vinci Code, Tom Hanks has never ceased to amaze his fans. Now, imagine watching him on the screen with some more fresh performances and new releases even after he's gone. Wait, what?
Well, according to a report from 16th May, our all-time favorite star revealed that discussions are happening in the film industry about the possibility of using deep fake technology to continue actors' careers. His remarks came as the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant said musicians could use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to complete songs.
Wait, what's deep fake, you may ask? Well, it's an AI technology that creates incredibly realistic media by superimposing one person's features onto another's body or manipulating sounds. Virtually speaking, it can bring someone back to life on screen.
Following the mantra of #TheShowMustGoOn, Tom Hanks said, "I could be hit by a bus tomorrow and that's it, but performances can go on and on."

However, Tom admitted the developments posed artistic and legal challenges. "Outside the understanding of AI and deep fake, there'll be nothing to tell you that it's not me and me alone. And it's going to have some degree of lifelike quality. That's certainly an artistic challenge but it's also a legal one." Hanks added.
Besides, according to another report, Irene Solaiman, a safety and policy expert at the AI company Hugging Face said, "I look at these generations multiple times a day and I have a very hard time telling them apart. It's going to be a tough road ahead." Solaiman further shed light on the potential misuse of these technologies, such as creating fake histories or manipulating videos for political propaganda. "It's going to be a tough road ahead," Solaiman warns.
Nevertheless, coming back to the story, Tom Hanks raises an interesting question: even if people can tell that it's AI, will they care?
