The talk of the (industrial) town is Industry 4.0 and at the center of its push is the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and edge computing. Considered the fourth industrial revolution, the acceleration came about during the pandemic when potential problems in supply chains and reduced workforces were brought up. This led manufacturers to consider transitioning to digital solutions, increasing the global adoption of IIoT.

It is believed that IIoT technology has transformed multiple sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, aerospace, retail and more. By making use of machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, IIoT produces a vast number of benefits. Some of these include stronger innovation, efficiency, reduced costs, less wastage, increased production, better safety and according to some studies, it has heightened business growth by 25%.

It’s no wonder that organizations are turning to IIoT. Reportedly, the global IIoT market size in 2021 was $263.5 billion with an expectation to reach a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 23.1% between 2022 and 2030.

However, this brilliance does come with its challenges, as most times brilliance does. According to MIT Technology Review, 95% of companies have scalability issues or find the right balance to gain competitive advantages. This is why, at the moment, IIoT is found in larger organizations for the most part. The high investment needed to adopt the technology and the complexities involved in managing it prove to be hurdles.

As said by McKinsey, security is of paramount importance. Large organizations are spread over diverse geographical locations. This increases the risk of threats as well as challenges in maintenance. Additionally, as IIoT devices produce tremendous amounts of organization-critical data, they become targets for cybercriminals. For successful operations, enhanced security measures are needed.

Interestingly, despite the challenges involved, companies are seeing the long-term benefits of switching to digital solutions. Going forward though, organizations that do not embrace IIoT solutions might find it hard to compete with the ones that do. It is vital to have the right plan as well.
