They’re all popular platforms that allow you to connect with the world. They’re all also owned and operated by Meta.
It’s certainly justified that the company’s annual event is called Meta Connect, right?
Meta Connect is “a two-day virtual event focused on AI and virtual, mixed and augmented realities.” scheduled for September 27 and 28, 2023.
Also, it’s no surprise that a lot of announcements made at the event were focused on artificial intelligence (AI), owing to the unbelievable speed the sector has advanced at in the last year but also to ensure Meta stays ahead of its competitors.
So, what were the big announcements made at the event? Let’s explore!
What Were The Big Announcements At Meta Connect?
-
A variety of AI-powered bots! That’s what Meta is aiming for now that AI chatbots are all the rage!
-
Meta AI, one of the AI assistants Meta announced, is a beta version of the advanced conversational assistant that will be available on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
-
As per the company’s website, “Meta AI can give you real-time information and generate photorealistic images from your text prompts in seconds to share with friends.” Essentially, you get real-time web results for queries.
-
While Meta AI is powered by a custom model that leverages Meta’s Llama 2 and its latest LLM (large language model) research, the real-time web results magic is courtesy of Microsoft’s Bing.
-
Speaking about Meta AI, Ahmad Al-Dahle, VP of GenAI at Meta, said, “With Meta AI, we saw an opportunity to take this capability and create an assistant that can do more than just write poems … Whether you want to know the history of Eggs Benedict, or how to make it, or even where to get it in San Francisco, Meta AI can help ensure you have access to the most up-to-date information through the power of search.”
-
Ahead of this, Meta is also bringing chatbot-like AI characters based on celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, Tom Brady etc. that users can interact with across Meta’s platforms. How many you ask – a whopping 28 celebrities!
-
What’s there for businesses? Meta’s AI Studio, which is a platform that will help businesses build customized AI chatbots that reflect individual company brand values, for their messaging services across Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.
-
Meta will also bring its users AI-powered image editing that lets you co-create AI-generated images with friends. Furthermore, you can even create AI stickers, by which you can “effortlessly generate customized stickers for your chats and stories.”
What Other Announcements Were Made?
Among the other highlights were the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and Meta Quest 3. Simply because we haven’t put them under “big announcements” doesn’t mean these products weren’t front and center!
-
Meta announced Quest 3, its virtual reality headset that’s positioned to offer “mixed reality” experiences.
-
In addition to higher-resolution displays, better graphics, a six-month Quest+ VR subscription, better passthrough tech (10x pixels as compared to its predecessor), a $500 starting price and other enhancements, the Quest 3 will also come with Headspace (soon).
-
The event also teased Quest for Business, which offers enterprise AR applications and is believed to be compatible with numerous business applications like Microsoft 365.
-
Headspace is a “virtual playground for your mind” where you can interact, wind down and hang out with your friends.
-
Next, the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which will allow users to livestream to friends and followers straight from the glasses. Starting at $299, the glasses will offer more than 150 design combinations and will soon allow users to translate text.
The event even featured Mark Zuckerberg (obviously!) as the keynote speaker, who provided updates on the next iteration of Quest software, including Roblox (an online game platform).
Speaking on the company’s announcements, Zuckerberg said, "Sometimes we innovate by releasing something that's never been seen before … But sometimes we innovate by taking something that is awesome, but super expensive, and making it so it can be affordable for everyone or even free."
As per reports, Zuckerberg went 33 minutes without mentioning the word “metaverse”, which is interesting considering how much of the company’s focus revolves around it. They even rebranded the company as “Meta”!
What do you make of Meta’s latest announcements? Will these products transform the businesses landscape?
