As Christmas week is around the corner, the healthcare sector has received an AI-packed present!

According to a recent report, following in the footsteps of tech behemoths like Google and OpenAI, big names in the healthcare sector such as Oscar, CVS Health, Stanford Health, Boston Children’s Hospital, UC San Diego Health, UC Davis Health and WellSpan Health are all on board, ready to embrace the AI revolution. The report suggests these brands are rallying behind the Biden-Harris Administration’s vision, agreeing to sign up for a transformative journey toward the safe, secure and reliable integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into healthcare.

According to the report, the announcement on December 14th, marked a pivotal moment in evolution of healthcare AI. These commitments aren't just ink on paper; they're a roadmap towards unlocking the immense potential of large-scale AI models within healthcare. It means AI will be tackling a multitude of tasks while safeguarding patient data and minimizing risks.

Why the fuss about AI in healthcare, you ask?

  • Well, even before the age of ChatGPT and other AI wizards, healthcare giants were already hyped about AI's role in diagnosing diseases early and unearthing novel treatments.

  • Here’s the twist: despite the buzz around AI innovation in healthcare, doubts loom large.

  • A GE Healthcare survey spilled the tea, revealing that over 55% of clinicians weren’t sold on AI in medicine. More seasoned clinicians, those with over 16 years of experience, were even more skeptical, with a whopping 67% lacking faith in AI.

So, what’s the game plan for these 28 healthcare titans who've hitched their wagons to the Biden administration’s ethical AI train?

  • Well, the report says tech giants are planning to leverage AI for streamlined care, better patient experiences and to ease the burnout burden on clinicians. Their belief is loud and clear: AI isn't just a buzzword; it's a game-changer. They're heeding the US government’s Executive Order on AI for healthcare and medical applications.

  • Hold on, they aren’t diving in headfirst. They’ve got a roadmap laid out, aligning with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and FAVES (fair, valid, effective and safe) principles for AI. This means ensuring their AI projects are without any biases or known risks.

  • “We will establish policies and implement controls for applications of frontier models, including how data are acquired, managed and used. Our governance practices shall include maintaining a list of all applications using frontier models and setting an effective framework for risk management and governance, with defined roles and responsibilities for approving the use of frontier models and AI applications,” the companies wrote.

Now you might be wondering, what are they doing to manage risks?

  • That’s high on their priority list too. Healthcare giants are not just throwing caution to the wind. They're tracking their AI-powered applications, foreseeing potential harm and taking steps to nip it in the bud. Governance, roles and responsibilities — are all defined crisply to ensure that their AI initiatives play by the rules.

  • That's not all. These healthcare juggernauts are committed to pushing the boundaries. They’re still exploring and innovating with AI, all while ensuring safety and privacy. Testing, prototyping, monitoring — they’ve got a whole process in place to ensure these new applications meet the mark, fair and square.

  • Moreover, they’re not skimping on training their workforce, making sure they're well-versed in developing and using applications powered by these cutting-edge AI models. They're keeping an eye on open-source technology too, making sure regulated AI doesn’t throw a wrench in their research and development.

In a nutshell, this move by healthcare giants is not just a signature on paper; it's a commitment to revolutionize healthcare with AI and they’re making every move count!

Do you think this step by healthcare giants will kick start a whole new AI revolution? Should other industries also align their vision for AI with the Executive Order?
