Imagine you’re the commander of a spaceship. However, you’re facing off against an army of hostile aliens who are adamant about destroying your ship. Yes, you’ve got cannons on board to combat them but so do aliens – and they’re busy firing away!

Oops, you're hit! You fire back and destroy some of the alien ships but whoops – you're hit again! You know you won’t be able to take more. The battle continues!

You keep flying throug..........

GAME OVER!

You got hit once more and that’s all your ship could take. You lost!

Well, that was our little rendition of Space Invaders! Do you remember it? Maybe you played a modernized version on a laptop or phone or saw it in a movie or TV show?

Either way, the awesomeness of video games owes technology a big thanks! The two certainly seem synonymous because as technology has developed, so have video games and the experiences associated with them.

However, have they reached an impasse at the moment? At least some leading game developers seem to think so.

What’s the problem with the latest technology? Let’s explore:

What’s The Gaming Industry’s Take On Generative AI?

  • While Japan’s video game company Koei Tecmo and other game developers have long used conventional algorithmic artificial intelligence in developing games, there remains a gap in utilizing its latest form – Generative AI.

  • Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show 2023, one of the biggest annual video game trade shows in the world, Hisashi Koinuma, President and COO of Koei Tecmo Games, said, “We are not yet at the stage of integrating generative AI into our products, but are in the process of testing various ways to integrate it in the future.”

  • [contd.] “We are still in the process of researching and studying how and to what extent generative AI, including rights-related issues, will benefit game production, and how much it will contribute to making better games.”

  • A prominent issue that arises is copyright infringement, which is a mutually recognized problem in the gaming industry. This even led to Microsoft telling users of its generative AI service, Copilot, that it would assume legal responsibilities in case of such infringements.

What Was Said About AR/VR?

  • This has been further enhanced following Apple’s announcement of its Vision Pro headset, Sony’s VR2 launch and Meta’s ever developing Quest products.

  • However, for many, the majority of games using AR/VR haven’t been up to the mark.

  • To this, Hisashi Koinuma said, “We were one of the first companies that tried to develop VR games … However, it was still too early: There were various obstacles, such as the gadgets themselves not being suitable for playing games for long periods of time.”

  • [contd.] “We felt that these products were not yet at the stage of being a tool that could provide pure enjoyment that you can get from playing games.”

  • [contd.] “So, VR, Meta, or whatever, I realized after my first entry that it would be difficult for us to be successful in the market until the ‘soil’ is cultivated well for users to be able to play games with new devices for a long time. So we would like to try again when the time comes.”

GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and Nvidia, a maker of the kinds of chips that games run on, are leading the Generative AI industry. Yet, the two aren’t meeting eye-to-eye at the moment. Quite ironic, right?

That being said, it’s a common consensus that the possible applications and use cases of Generative AI and AR/VR are huge in the gaming space. According to a report, in the next 5 to 10 years, over 50% of the video game development process will be supported by Generative AI.

Do you think game developers should adopt Generative AI soon? Will better hardware help make AR/VR games mainstream?
