As the popularity of electric vehicles (EV) and its market grows, automakers find the need to secure cost-efficient and more powerful batteries to match competitors in the industry to avoid cutting-back on production plans.

As a result, American automaker General Motors is making a range of moves to produce higher-performance and cheaper batteries, including a new partnership with industry-leading battery manufacturer, Samsung SDI.

So, what’s the agreement between GM and Samsung SDI about? Let’s explore!

What Is The General Motors And Samsung SDI Agreement About?

  • Through a news release published on its website, Samsung SDI announced that it has finalized an agreement with automaker General Motors to form a new joint venture to supply EV batteries in the United States.

  • The two companies had met in March and April of 2023 to discuss the partnership and came to an agreement in April of last year.

  • The ceremony marking the finalization of the agreement was held at Samsung SDI's office in Seoul.

  • As per the agreement, both companies will invest around $3.5 billion.

  • The new joint venture will be located in New Carlisle, Indiana, will be spread over a 680-acre site and will support the local economy by generating an expected 1,600+ jobs.

  • The plan is to build a new battery cell manufacturing plant with an annual production capacity of 27GWh initially and a target of beginning mass production in 2027.

  • Furthermore, the intended expansion plan is expected to rise to 36GWh.

  • The plant is expected to produce NCA-based high-performance nickel-rich prismatic batteries that will be deployed in GM EVs.

  • Samsung SDI's prismatic batteries are designed to improve driving range, offer high energy density and enhance safety.

What Did General Motors And Samsung SDI Executives Say?

  • Mary Barra, Chair and CEO of General Motors, said, “The Samsung SDI joint venture is the latest example of GM’s commitment to driving innovation in America.”

  • [Contd.] “The EV market and GM sales will continue to grow as more customers experience our EVs, the charging infrastructure builds out and we expand into more segments.”

  • Yoon-ho Choi, the CEO of Samsung SDI, said, “Building on last year's partnership with GM, the No. 1 automaker in North America, we have established a premium battery production hub to lead the US EV market.”

  • [Contd.] “Samsung SDI will make best efforts to support GM enhance its leadership in the EV market with the company’s PRiMX battery products featuring 'Super Gap' technology.”

This move adds to other recent efforts taken by General Motors to streamline and strengthen the power requirements for its vehicles and assembly plants, which included a long-term deal with NorthStar Clean Energy.

What Does The General Motors And NorthStar Clean Energy Deal Consist Of?

  • Recently, General Motors announced that it had signed a 15-year renewable energy purchase agreement with NorthStar Clean Energy for three of its assembly plants.

  • NorthStar’s Newport Solar project in Newport, Arkansas, will provide electricity to GM’s Lansing Delta Township Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan, as well as the Wentzville Assembly site in Missouri.

  • The move will see NorthStar add renewable energy directly to GM’s sourcing grid.

  • The agreement marks GM’s largest power purchase deal and supports its goal to be carbon neutral by 2040.

  • Rob Threlkeld, the Director of Global Energy Strategy at General Motors, said, “By expanding our renewable electricity portfolio, we are taking a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and advancing our broader sustainability goals.”

  • “This facility not only supports our renewable electricity strategy, but also demonstrates our dedication to a sustainable future for all.”

  • So far, GM has sourcing agreements with 17 renewable energy plants across 11 states, which makes the company the world’s largest buyer of renewable power by capacity in the automotive industry.

Do you think these moves will help General Motors grow its customer base and help it capture a better market share in the electric vehicle market? Do you think the move will also help Samsung SDI gain more customers in the automotive market?
