There was a time when machines like cars or other vehicles and computer software didnā€™t see eye to eye at any point.

Eventually, the digital revolution caught up such industries by finding applicability in its manufacturing processes and back-office operations.

Today, entire manufacturing plants can be run on software, while automakers are investing big in producing autonomous vehicles or self-driving cars that can handle the entire driving experience on its own.

Suffice it to say, software plays a major role in the automotive industry and offers a range of use cases within vehicles as well as through the production and post-purchase services processes.

What becomes a challenge for automakers is sourcing the right software for their unique requirements.

This too could soon be a problem of the past, with automaker General Motors, global automotive supplier Magna and leading technology services and consulting company Wipro Ltd. teaming up to announce a solution!

So, what did the group come up with? Letā€™s explore!

What Did The Three Companies Announced?

  • Through a news release, General Motors, Magna and Wipro announced that they teamed up to develop a B2B sales platform to buy and sell automotive software.

  • The platform will be called SDVerse and will aim to ā€œrevolutionize the automotive software sourcing and procurement process by providing a matchmaking platform for buyers and sellers of embedded automotive software.ā€

  • SDVerse will connect buyers and sellers directly through a transparent and efficient digital platform.

  • Sellers can list software features and attributes, while buyers will be able to search, browse and explore available software products through a comprehensive catalogue.

  • Currently in development, SDVerse is expected to feature hundreds of automotive software products.

  • The key benefits of the platform include reduced cost, time and complexity, higher quality of software, improved resource allocation, improved revenue for sellers and a new approach to software sourcing.

  • While the founding members will collaboratively govern the platform, it already possesses a ā€œLaunch Partnerā€ group, which includes Ampere (the EV and Software pure player of Renault Group), FEV, Forvia, HL Mando, NXP Semiconductors, TTTech Auto and Valeo.

  • The CEO of SDVerse will be Prashant Gulati (w.e.f. March 5, 2024), who has over two decades of experience launching and leading automotive organizations and is a thought leader in software technology.

  • Leaders from across the three companies will participate in a livestream panel discussion to provide further depth and insights into SDVerse.

What Did Stakeholders Say?

  • Dan Nicholson, VP, Strategic Technology Initiatives, General Motors, said, ā€œAutomotive grade software development is rapidly transforming, and we all need to ask ourselves how we get customers really unique differentiating features faster. Part of that is identifying the common underlying code that can be shared in the name of higher quality and lower costs for our end customers.ā€

  • [Contd.] ā€œThis first-ever software marketplace creates an independent, industry-driven one-stop-shop for embedded systems software, significantly expanding access to new innovations, helping to drive down cost, and allowing companies like GM to implement critical software more quickly.ā€

  • Joerg Grotendorst, SVP, Corporate R&D at Magna, said, ā€œMagnaā€™s participation in SDVerse is driven by our ongoing commitment to foster collaboration and drive the automotive industry forward. By embracing this innovative platform, we aim to create a more interconnected ecosystem that encourages OEMs, suppliers, and specialty software developers to collaborate and co-create cutting-edge solutions.ā€

  • [Contd.] ā€œSDVerse represents a transformative opportunity to revolutionize software development, sales, and sourcing processes, ultimately accelerating the industry's transition to the software-defined vehicle.ā€

  • Harmeet Chauhan, Global Head Wipro Engineering Edge, Wipro Limited, said, ā€œThe market for automotive software is expected to nearly double this decade, potentially outpacing the growth of software development talent pools.ā€

  • [Contd.] ā€œThe current paradigm for software sourcing will likely not be able to overcome this growing gap without sacrificing both profitability and the auto industryā€™s aspirations for software defined vehicles. SDVerse addresses these pain points, offering a wide range of benefits across the industry.ā€

Do you think this move will help automakers? Do you think it will inspire competing companies to follow suit and create similar platforms?
