From Social App To Recruiting Platform - Is TikTok The New Competitor For LinkedIn?
Updated on Wed, May 31, 2023
PS: You know that TOT is a hypothetical gameshow, right?
Although the name is hypothetical- TikTok is not just a platform for sharing short videos anymore; it has become a stage to acknowledge or rather ‘recruit’ emerging talent.
Yes, you read it right; according to a report, TikTok has transformed into a bona fide audition platform, captivating the attention of industry professionals and even lawmakers. The app's influence on the entertainment industry has grown exponentially and it has become clear that TikTok is opening the gates of opportunities for artists. #ArtistsUnite
Even leading dance companies such as the American Ballet Theatre have recognized the potential of TikTok, using it as a tool for branding and recruitment. Neha Dharmapuram, a TikTok creator and dancer, lauded the platform, stating, "This app is a gold mine for artists like me who are still looking for their big break." In fact, TikTok helped her secure an audition for the Broadway-bound musical Come Fall In Love — The DDLJ Musical.
Besides, Jonny Kaps, the co-founder and CEO of independent label +1 Records, attested to TikTok's significance, "It's the most important thing that's happened in the music industry in a long time. It just allows us to build a new artist audience in a way that we've never really been able to do before."
On the other hand, TikTok's relationship with the entertainment industry hasn't been without challenges.
The report says TikTok's growing cultural influence, particularly among young people, has raised concerns among US lawmakers regarding its ties to China. Its expansion into services directly offered to artists has created a "frenemy" dynamic with record labels. Moreover, music marketers acknowledge that TikTok must strike a delicate balance to avoid upsetting major labels as it "encroaches upon their territory."
Besides, the UK parliament recently banned TikTok from its network due to security concerns. This decision extends to the devices issued to staff, following the UK government's earlier ban on ministers using the app on their work phones after a security review.
Nevertheless, as TikTok continues to evolve and make waves in the entertainment industry, it remains a debate among lawmakers and industry professionals. Only time will tell if TikTok can cross the challenges and emerge as a successful recruiting platform.
Do you think TikTok's ability to scout talent will help establish itself as a powerhouse in the digital landscape? Feel free to pitch your thoughts in the comment section below.
