EV Automaker Lucid Motors To Expand Its US Facility By 3 Million Sq. Ft. And More!
Updated on Wed, Feb 14, 2024
This has drawn the attention of companies that aren’t conventional automobile manufacturers, such as Xiaomi and Huawei to enter the sector, while established market leaders like Tesla and BYD are competing to capture market share.
On the other hand, existing EV companies are improving their offerings, by producing new models or enhancing their manufacturing plants. Leading the pack in such initiatives is Lucid Motors Group.
So, what’s Lucid Motors up to? Let’s explore!
What Did Lucid Motors Announce?
-
In a release, Lucid Motors announced it plans to expand its US Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP-1 in Casa Grande, Arizona) by about 3 million square feet, taking the total area to over 3.85 million square feet.
-
The move comes as the company wants to boost its production capacity ahead of its new fully electric SUV, Lucid Gravity, with an eye to support future growth.
-
The expansion will include space for its manufacturing facility and warehouse.
-
Once complete, the facility will offer a range of functions in the campus, including “a new General Assembly line, new Quality and Semi-Knock Down (SKD) centers, expanded Body and Paint shops, a relocated Logistics center and a relocated and expanded Powertrain facility, where Lucid’s award-winning proprietary powertrain technology will be built.”
-
In addition to this, the facility now includes one of the world’s most advanced stamping facilities, which will commence later in 2024 and allow for the highest quality standards, greater flexibility, and reduced costs.
-
Furthermore, by leveraging partnerships with the Arizona Commerce Authority, City of Casa Grande and Central Arizona College, the company will facilitate home-grown Arizona talent development and will provide expert skill development training.
What Did Lucid Motors Officials Say?
-
Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO at Lucid, said, “The expansion of our manufacturing footprint in Arizona is a significant milestone for the company, as we prepare for the next phase of Lucid’s growth.”
-
[Contd.] “Our expanded state-of-the-art factory will allow us to continue to deliver our great cars to our customers around the world, including the Lucid Gravity in the near future. We are proud to call Casa Grande home, to continue in our role pioneering advanced technology in Arizona, and to be an American electric vehicle company.”
-
Steven David, SVP of Operations at Lucid, said, “In just a few short years, the Lucid team has evolved our manufacturing footprint into one of the few highly integrated electric vehicle manufacturing plants in the US.”
- [Contd.] “This expanded state-of-the-art plant will bring greater operational efficiency to our manufacturing process and allow us to continue to deliver our high-quality, groundbreaking electric vehicles to our customers.”
What Other Moves Is Lucid Motors Making?
-
Lucid’s moves aren’t restricted to the US only, as the company is planning to accelerate the second phase of its EV production in Saudi Arabia, which includes some of its models.
-
The plan is to increase its current production capacity from 5,000 vehicles per year to 155,000 vehicles per year, in the company’s only production facility outside the US.
-
Lucid’s facility is also the only EV factory in the region and is set to play a major role in the region’s transition from conventional vehicles to electric vehicles.
-
Moreover, the company recently unveiled an electric police car in Saudi Arabia, which comes with a rooftop drone carrier. The vehicle was revealed at the World Defense Show in Riyadh on February 4, 2024.
- The carrier consists of an oversized strobe light and siren setup, which opens up at the touch of a button.
Do you think these moves by Lucid Motors will help it capture a stronger market share in the EV industry? Can Lucid Motors compete with established electric vehicle leaders with these strategic moves?
