However, there are many areas that still face issues of low connectivity and in some cases, this is because of geographical barriers.
This is what Elon Musk is looking to solve with his SpaceX venture, which brought the world Starlink, which consists of a constellation of space satellites that offer internet services, boosting connectivity to areas where high-speed or any form of the internet isn’t available.
Interestingly, SpaceX’s Starlink owns around 60% of the 7,500 satellites that orbit Earth.
This is what Elon Musk plans to achieve with his latest move.
So, what did the tech tycoon do now? Let’s explore!
What Did Elon Musk Announce About Starlink?
-
Earlier in the year, Elon Musk’s Starlink secured its operating permit in Indonesia, which was revealed by the communications minister of the country on May 8, 2024.
-
Now, on May 19, 2024, Elon Musk visited the country to launch SpaceX’s satellite internet service alongside Indonesian Health Minister, Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
-
One of the key uses of this internet service is to improve internet services for Indonesia’s health sector.
-
Arriving on the island of Bali by private jet just before the launch ceremony at a community health center in Denpasar, Elon Musk mentioned the service would help millions across rural areas and other locations in the country and its benefits can extend to education as well.
-
As per reports, Starlink was launched at three healthcare centers, which include two in Bali and one on the remote island of Aru in Maluku.
-
Indonesia consists of five main islands and over 17,000 islands and islets, with three different time zones and a population of over 270 million.
-
The launch was accompanied by a video presentation showing how high speeds provided real-time input of data and helped tackle health challenges such as stunting and malnutrition.
-
Furthermore, the communications minister also mentioned that Starlink would be commercially available, with the government focusing on bringing connectivity first to outer and underdeveloped regions.
-
Starlink even obtained a permit to operate as an internet service provider for retail consumers, prior to the launch event.
-
Indonesia, which becomes the third country in Southeast Asia to avail Starlink’s services after Malaysia and the Philippines (through a deal signed in 2022 with a private firm), has been trying to attract Elon Musk’s Tesla to build manufacturing plants to help develop the country’s electric vehicle (EV) sector.
-
At the launch Elon Musk was also asked about plans to invest in the country’s EV sector, to which Musk replied saying he was focused on Starlink first but mentioned, “It’s very likely that my companies will invest in Indonesia.”

What Did Elon Musk Say?
-
Speaking about bringing Starlink’s availability to Indonesia, Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, spoke to local media and highlighted the importance of Starlink’s offering, saying, “I'm very excited to bring connectivity to places that have low connectivity.”
-
[Contd.] “We are focusing this event on Starlink and the benefits that connectivity brings to remote islands.”
-
[Contd.] “It is really important to emphasize the importance of internet connectivity and how much of a life-changer and a life-saver it can be.”
-
[Contd.] “When you have access to the internet, you can learn anything. But if you don’t have internet connectivity, it is very difficult to learn.”
-
[Contd.] “And if you have goods and services you wish to sell to the world, and even if you are in a remote village, you can now do so with internet connection. So you can bring a lot of prosperity to [remote] communities.”
Do you think Starlink should enter other countries as well? Do you think competitors should consider making similar moves?
