There’s something strange on the internet! Who’re you going to call? COMPUTERS!

A not-so-great adaptation of the Ghostbusters but you’ll understand why we used it when you read today’s news.

Even though modern smartphones can compete with computers, they can’t replace them. At least not as far as businesses or professionals needing high-powered, on-premises computing goes.

However, considering businesses have varying requirements and can’t keep purchasing new machines to fulfill changing needs, cloud computing services exist. These services enable businesses to customize their IT ecosystems as per requirements and scale up/down successfully.

In fact, the global cloud computing market witnessed a whooping 635% jump from 2010 ($24.63 billion) to 2020 ($156.4 billion) and is expected to grow past $1 trillion by 2028.

Clearly, there’s massive potential in the sector.

With one eye on the future, one of the biggest names in the domain, Shadow, is making moves to capture individual users, gamers, creative professionals and enterprises.

Now the company is here with a new move, aimed at benefiting businesses.

So, what’s the move? Let’s explore:

What Is Shadow All About?

•, better known simply as Shadow, is a cloud computing service provider that offers virtual machines that can be accessed on all devices, through an application.

  • While Shadow is popular for its cloud PCs designed for gaming (Shadow PC Gaming) which come with dedicated Nvidia GPUs, the company’s cloud PCs are also available for creative professionals and enterprises, through Shadow PC Pro and Shadow PC Enterprise, respectively.

  • The company also offers cloud storage (Shadow Drive), all-in-one GPU solutions for AI and rendering (Spot Computing) and solutions for games studios & publishers (Game Creator).

  • According to the company’s website, “At Shadow, we strive to become the definitive cloud platform for gamers, creatives, and businesses, because we believe that cloud technologies have the potential to bring technological freedom to all.

  • [Contd.] In today’s world, doing what you love shouldn’t mean worrying about components and buying expensive gear.”

What Is Shadow’s Latest Offering?

  • The company’s latest service is Shadow PC Essential.

  • The company describes it as “a Windows PC, secure and available everywhere, for all professional and personal office use.”

  • Essentially, it can be accessed from any device and is targeted at companies that require unified work environments.

  • The cost of the service starts at 9.99 - wondering if it’s 9.99 dollars, euros or pounds? That’s the cool part about the service as it costs the same across all currencies, i.e., $9.99 / €9.99 / £9.99 per month.

  • The service comes with the Microsoft Office suite, Windows 10 Home, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage (256GB in the launch offer) and the Intel Xeon CPU with 4 virtual cores and is perfect for basic usage.

  • Users can transform devices such as laptops, smartphones, Raspberry Pis and Macs into a Windows PC, all they require is an internet connection.

How Will Businesses Benefit From This Offering?

  • For one, this can help reduce all the last-minute fumbling and efforts to prepare a machine for a fresh recruit, as admins can just create a new Shadow PC Essential instance and provide the new employee with credentials.

  • This will give new employees and even third-party workers access to the company’s applications and services in a controlled environment.

  • Moreover, this will be useful for remote workers, interns or trainees required to use their own devices or temporary workers hired on a project-by-project basis. #BYOD

  • While Microsoft also currently offers cloud PC services through its Windows 365 offering, Shadow’s advantage comes in reduced pricing that offers a Windows PC that’s capable of running apps such as Word, Excel, Outlook and others.

There’s no question of the rise in business demand for cloud computing and cloud PCs. Shadow’s recent announcement aims to position them at the forefront of this demand.

What do you think of Shadow’s offering? Will the adoption of cloud PCs reshape the work environment?
