BYD Recalls Almost 100,000 EVs For Fire Risks As It Looks To Enter The Two-Wheeler Space

This includes the entry of brands not associated with the industry entering the arena, such as Xiaomi and Huawei, as well as the biggest player in this league, BYD, which is going toe-to-toe with Tesla, its biggest contender in the EV market.
As the company is progressing at unprecedented speeds, it appears there are a few speed bumps on its otherwise smooth sailing road, which have appeared in the form of recalls.
What Is The BYD Recall About?
-
BYD informed the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) that it is recalling 96,714 EVs in China.
-
This move is scheduled to commence from September 30, 2024, and will span its Dolphin and Yuan Plus models that were manufactured in China between November 2022 and December 2023.
-
As such, these two models account for BYD’s top two selling models in 2023 or 26% of the three million vehicles sold.
-
However, the statement didn’t mention if any exported vehicles were affected.
-
As per a statement issued by the regulatory body, the recall is based on a manufacturing fault involving a steering control unit, which could lead to fire risks in the vehicle.
-
The solution includes asking its dealers to install a physical fix.
-
BYD did not provide a comment on the matter.

While this recall remains one rare instance where the company faced a hiccup, it isn’t the first time it’s had a recall. A previous one came in 2022, when the company had to recall Tang plug-in hybrid cars citing a defect in its battery pack that could lead to fires.
On the whole, BYD (also called Build Your Dreams) has big plans going forward.
What’s On The Cards For BYD?
-
Back in the beginning of the year, the hybrid and electric car manufacturer announced its intentions to enter the two-wheeler segment, as it stepped up its R&D investments.
-
Now, reports citing leaked patent drawings show the Chinese company’s dream is ready to be materialized.
-
By appearance, the first two-wheeler product the company is set to manufacture and sell is an electric maxi-scooter.
-
The new electric vehicle is reportedly going to be revealed at the 2024 EICMA AKA the Milan Motorcycle Shows, which is scheduled to be held between November 7 and November 10.
-
This will likely be followed by a launch in China before hitting European and other foreign markets.
-
However, BYD’s European dream may be affected by the European Union (EU), as it gears up to conduct a vote that plans to impose tariffs as high as 45%.
-
The vote is scheduled for October 4, 2024, which could still be changed.
-
On the other hand, Chinese automakers including BYD have come across declining sales in the European market, selling the fewest EVs over the last 18 months, with a 48% drop in registrations in the region.
-
Yet, the company maintains a healthy market share regarding global sales.
As a company that managed to roll out one million units in the last three months alone, BYD must be mindful of errors in its products, as even the smallest chinks in its vast armor can cause a cascading set of failures, diminishing its name.
Do you think automakers should be subject to stricter inspections and testing before deploying their vehicles on both local and global markets?
