When it comes to indulging in non-stop entertainment, Netflix has probably become a go-to destination for many, offering an array of TV shows, movies and everything in between. From classic sitcoms like FRIENDS to captivating series like Stranger Things and heartwarming rom-com like Emily In Paris, Netflix has redefined how we consume content.
Now, hold on tight because this time, the beloved streaming platform is making headlines for something other than its latest releases.
According to a report, Netflix, the streaming giant, has found itself at the center of a heated controversy. A job listing for an artificial intelligence (AI) expert has triggered anger among striking Hollywood actors and writers. The job position promises a jaw-dropping salary of up to $900,000 per year, or £700,000, sending shockwaves through the industry. #AIJobsAtNetflix
The same report says the controversial job ad was brought to light by The Intercept, a media outlet known for its investigative prowess. Listed on Netflix's job page, the role is part of the Machine Learning Platform team, the brains behind the Netflix algorithm that recommends programs to millions of viewers.
However, what's causing the uproar is the possibility surrounding the AI expert's potential influence on content decisions. #IsAIBecomingEverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce
What's the other side of the story?
- Well, Netflix has declined to comment about the job listings but in one of its interviews, it has assured that AI will not replace the creative process. "The best stories are original, insightful and often come from people's own experiences," Netflix said.
- Besides, according to the report, "the Writers' Guild Association, WGA, has proposed a system that regulates the use of AI in the writing process and prevents it being used as source material."
- On the other hand, as the strike continues, Hollywood unions are sending a clear message to Netflix and the industry at large: The rise of AI should be met with careful consideration and collaboration, ensuring that it complements human creativity rather than replacing it. #TheRiseOfAIAndItsChallenges
However, streaming platforms are not the only ones suffering, as statistics show how AI will majorly impact other businesses as well.
- The report highlights that according to McKinsey Global Institute, AI adoption could drive a staggering $13 trillion in additional global economic activity by 2030, equivalent to a 16% boost in cumulative GDP. However, this growth comes at a cost, with the report indicating that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs.
- Forbes echoes the sentiment, pointing out that two million manufacturing workers could face displacement by AI by 2025.
- Wait, the impact doesn't stop there; by 2030, up to 14% of the global workforce may need to consider switching careers due to the rise of digitization, robotics and AI advancements.
Now, it will be worth watching if businesses are prepared to sail the rough sea of AI jobs in the face of protests.
Moreover, amid this rapidly unfolding drama, one thing is sure – the battle between Hollywood and other industries and AI has only just begun. Only time will tell if the entertainment industry and businesses are prepared for this rollercoaster ride – with major twists and turns of power and the potential of AI in the coming years.
Do you think the protests will reshape the future of how businesses look at AI talent? Or will human effort be compromised for AI automation? Our comments section awaits your thoughts!
