Overall Rating
As the application and capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) keep growing, AI technology is finding a strong place in all industries – including the automotive industry.

In addition to helping streamline workflows and enhance operations in the designing, manufacturing and testing processes, the responsive capabilities of generative AI are finding its way into the infotainment, navigation and other systems in vehicles.

Furthermore, to offer their users the latest and most capable generative AI tools, automakers are tying up with the leaders of the AI sector.

This includes German automaker Audi’s latest partnership with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT’s capabilities to its vehicles.

So, what features will ChatGPT add to Audi’s vehicles? Let’s explore!

What Will Audi’s Integration Of ChatGPT Bring?

  • Through a press release published on its website, Audi announced that it would be integrating ChatGPT into its infotainment system to enhance online voice inputs.

  • This will include models manufactured since 2021 that are equipped with its third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3).

  • Audi will integrate ChatGPT via Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, delivered through Cerence Chat Pro as an extension of Audi AI, its artificial intelligence assistant.

  • The integration will let them interact with their car using natural language and listen to information about things they want to know while driving.

  • Users can leverage the enhanced voice control to operate their infotainment, navigation and AC systems, with the addition of asking general knowledge questions now.

  • This ability will help users gain knowledge and information in real time without having to take their eyes off the road while driving.

  • “Foundation of this new feature for Audi customers is the Chat Pro solution from Cerence Inc., which offers an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration.”

  • Furthermore, Audi has improved its self-learning voice assistant with a new electronics architecture.

  • Here users can say “Hey Audi” or use the push-to-talk button on their steering wheel to ask questions, execute vehicle functions, search for destinations, get weather updates or more.

  • Questions are forwarded to ChatGPT only in the case the Audi assistant can’t provide an answer.

  • To maintain the highest levels of data security and privacy, all questions and answers are deleted after processing. ChatGPT doesn’t get any access to vehicle data.

  • Audi plans to increase the assistant’s capabilities in the future, including answering questions about the correct tire pressure and other use cases.

What Did Audi Executives Say?

  • Marcus Keith, Vice President of Interior, Infotainment and Connectivity Development at Audi said, “With the seamless integration of ChatGPT into our voice control, we are combining the strengths of both applications.”

  • [Contd.] “In addition to a range of voice-controlled functions, our customers will now benefit from simple and secure access to AI-based knowledge. This is the next step towards a best-in-class in-cabin experience in Audi vehicles.”

What Is Audi’s Stance On Artificial Intelligence?

  • As per the release, “Audi wants to fully exploit the potential of artificial intelligence – with services and products to improve the customer experience as well as in several fields of application to optimize business processes.”

  • [Contd.] “For example, as a creative impulse in design, in HR knowledge transfer as a chat bot and in production to support quality control.”

  • [Contd.] “The latest applications are an AI for checking spot welds in body construction and AI-based crack detection in the press shop.”

Do you think this move by Audi will help it grow its customer base? Do you think its competitors should make similar moves?
