Astranis Introduces Its Omega Geostationary Satellite For Dedicated Broadband

As the need for global internet connectivity increases, so do their delivery methods and capabilities.

Moving up from slow dial-up modems, the world was introduced to fast-paced wired broadband. Soon enough, we moved to wireless connectivity that came with limited range courtesy of Wi-Fi routers, which themselves were connected by cables.

Communication was then complimented with mobile data provided by network service providers, which enabled us to use the internet anywhere we wanted, as long as there was network availability.

This meant that to use the internet, we needed cellphone towers around, without which we wouldn’t be able to access the internet.

Now, the next big thing in internet connectivity is space broadband, which is being explored by some of the biggest technology companies.

This includes Elon Musk’s SpaceX, AST SpaceMobile and others who are launching numerous satellites to boost internet connectivity to remote areas, which would cut out the cost and effort of erecting network towers or laying out cables. This becomes helpful in areas with lower populations or where infrastructure gets damaged during times of emergency.

Now, Astranis Space Technologies Corporation, a company that specializes in geostationary communications satellites, has come out with some exciting news that’s set to improve the space broadband sector.

What Did Astranis Announce?

 
  • Through a news release published on its website, Astranis announced its next generation of geostationary communication satellites called Astranis Omega.

  • As per the company, the Astranis Omega offers a smaller, faster and more cost-effective satellite system with "better pound-for-pound performance than any other geostationary satellite in orbit today.”

  • The satellite is poised to offer 50+ Gbps of dedicated, uncontended throughput per satellite, at lower prices.

  • It’s fitted with Astranis’ next generation software-defined radio, which offers frequency flexibility, dynamic coverage, beam supersurging, formation flying and other benefits.

  • The company further mentioned that the first flight vehicle will come in 2025, with the first satellite launches coming in 2026.

  • Astranis’ commercial customers will be provided with flexibility and access to advanced capabilities such as dynamic shifting of capacity to where broadband internet is in highest demand.

  • Its government customers will receive support for the Protected Tactical Waveform and other government waveforms.

  • Astranis has been engaged in the field for the last three years and has sold out numerous launches of its MicroGEO communications satellites to global commercial customers, including countries such as the US, Mexico, Argentina, the Philippines, Thailand and others.

  • In addition to connecting millions of people to reliable broadband, the satellites will generate more than $1.2 billion in revenue for Astranis.

What Did Astranis Say?

 
  • Through the news release, John Gedmark, Astranis Co-founder and CEO, said, “Omega is a leap forward, offering an industry-best throughput per kg without sacrificing the things our customers love about Astranis. We will still sell dedicated satellites; we will still build them in less than 18 months; we will still maneuver our satellites on orbit; we will still operate our satellites for 8-10 years.”

  • [Contd.] “Astranis is moving faster than any other geostationary satellite manufacturer or operator today. We launched our first satellite in 2023. We made significant upgrades for the four satellites that will launch in 2024, and more for the five satellites that will launch in 2025. And now, we are releasing a new product for launch in 2026.”

  • [Contd.] “Some of that speed comes from pulling components in house. About half of our first satellite was built in house; the most recent satellites coming off of the line are closer to 60%; and Omega will be about 70% built in house.”

  • [Contd.] “Some of that speed comes from hiring more than 300 of the most talented engineers in the country. And some just comes from our company’s DNA: we feel an immense urgency to build great things to help connect our commercial customers and keep warfighters safe and in mission.”
