Do you remember this from school? Today we have memes that take a humorous angle by replacing the age old “Apple-Ball-Cat” with modern terms like “Apple-Bluetooth-Chat” as a reflection of how technology has captivated our lives!
Did you notice how “Apple” is common? Interesting, right?
Do you know what else has “Apple” in common? Today’s news story!
Surely, you’ve heard that Apple recently held its “Wonderlust” event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, USA, where it presented new products, features and software updates?
So, what’s new with Apple? Let’s explore:
What New Things Did Apple Announce At The Event?
-
The biggest item on the lineup probably was the new series of iPhones it launched, i.e., iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and the 15 Pro Max. Remember, pre-orders begin September 15.
-
While the base models (the 15 and 15 Plus) come with a ceramic covering, the top models (the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max) come with a titanium shell.
-
The phones have traded in Apple’s 2012-launched Lightning connector for the USB-C type (already used in Macs and iPads), which the company called the “universally accepted standard.” This will also allow Pro model users to transfer data to a Mac using USB 3 speeds (10 gigabits per second), while the others will use USB 2.0 speed.
-
The new models will also see the signature mute button replaced by the Action Button (Pro models), which will still silence the phone but will also be capable of performing other functions. These could include specific focus modes, launching the camera app, switching on the flashlight or triggering custom shortcuts.
-
Apple also showcased console-level gaming on the iPhone 15 Pro, playing AAA titles like Resident Evil: Village and Assassins Creed Mirage on the phone at the event. #GamersRejoice
-
Apple also launched its Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (available September 22).
-
Which brings us to the new “Double Tap” feature, where users tap their index finger and thumb twice (of their watch hand) to control the watch or activate the primary button of an app.
- Apple’s watches are also the company’s first carbon-neutral product, marking an important step in the company’s sustainability initiative. This was something the company brought front and center at the event. #SustainableApple
What Is The Sustainability Move About?
-
In 2020, Apple claimed it had a vision to bring the entire company’s carbon footprint to zero by 2030. We’re still just over 6 years away but the company has taken a good number of steps towards this goal.
-
This message was even conveyed through a video played at the event, which featured the company’s CEO, Tim Cook and renowned actress Octavia Spencer. The video displayed a meeting of Apple employees and executives meeting Mother Nature (Spencer) herself, listing the changes Apple has made towards its goal.
-
The initiative includes using 100% recycled aluminum in products such as MacBooks, Apple TVs, Apple Watches.
-
The company is also ditching the use of leather in its products, moving to a new textile it calls FineWoven, which will reportedly be used in phone cases, AirTag holders and watch bands.
-
The video also conveyed that every Apple office, store and data center runs using 100% clean energy. Furthermore, even Apple offices are carbon neutral, while over 300 suppliers of the company are “committed to using 100% renewable electricity for all Apple production by 2030.”
-
Of course, these are just some initiatives taken by Apple, that made its sustainability and carbon neutral goal an important feature of Wonderlust.
What do you think of Apple’s latest event? Do you feel the Big Tech company will lead the global sustainability move and influence other companies to follow suit?
