Apple Faces Fallout Over Delayed Siri AI Rollout

Apple’s evolving AI strategy is drawing attention from both consumers and investors, but separating confirmed developments from speculation is becoming increasingly important. While reports suggest the company is exploring a more flexible AI ecosystem for future versions of iOS, Apple has only officially confirmed one major development this week, a $250 million settlement tied to delayed Siri AI features.

Apple Inc. has agreed to settle a lawsuit over delayed AI-powered Siri features for $250 million, marking one of the company’s biggest AI-related legal setbacks to date. At the same time, reports surrounding iOS 27 suggest Apple may be reconsidering how it delivers artificial intelligence features across its ecosystem, though many details remain unconfirmed.

TL;DR

  • Apple agreed to a $250 million settlement over delayed Siri AI upgrades.
  • The lawsuit alleged Apple marketed Apple Intelligence features before they were ready.
  • Apple denied wrongdoing and said it remains focused on AI innovation.
  • Reports about iOS 27 supporting multiple third-party AI models remain speculative and unconfirmed by Apple.

Why Apple Was Sued Over Siri AI Features

According to Reuters, the lawsuit stemmed from Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where the company showcased advanced Siri capabilities powered by Apple Intelligence.

Apple promoted features such as deeper app integration, contextual awareness, and more personalized AI responses as part of its broader AI initiative. However, when the iPhone 16 lineup launched later that year, several of those capabilities were unavailable.

The plaintiffs argued that Apple’s marketing created expectations that the AI-powered Siri experience would be ready at launch, which allegedly impacted purchasing decisions and shareholder confidence.

Apple later delayed the Siri overhaul into 2026, intensifying criticism around the company’s AI rollout strategy.

Apple’s Response To The Lawsuit

Apple has not admitted wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

In a statement cited by Reuters, the company said it had already released several Apple Intelligence capabilities since its initial announcement and remains committed to advancing AI experiences responsibly.

Reports from The Verge and AP News noted that the proposed settlement applies to eligible U.S. customers who purchased supported iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models during a specific period.

Compensation could reportedly range between $25 and $95 per eligible device, depending on the number of claims submitted and final court approval.

What Reports Claim About iOS 27’s AI Future

Separate reports from Reuters and TechCrunch claim Apple is internally exploring a system that would let users access multiple third-party AI models through future versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

However, Apple has not officially announced such a feature.

The reports suggest Apple is testing a framework internally called “Extensions,” which could allow AI models from external providers to work alongside Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground.

At present, there is no official confirmation regarding which AI companies would participate, whether users would freely choose default AI models, how these integrations would function technically, or whether the feature will launch with iOS 27 at all.

The only publicly confirmed AI partnership currently in place is Apple’s integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT within Apple Intelligence.

Why Apple May Be Considering A Multi-Model AI Strategy

While the iOS 27 reports remain speculative, analysts believe the rumored approach reflects a larger shift occurring across the AI industry.

Instead of depending on a single AI provider, technology companies are increasingly moving toward interoperable ecosystems where users can access different models for different tasks such as coding, search, writing, productivity, or image generation.

For Apple, such a strategy could potentially help the company compete against rapidly evolving AI ecosystems from rivals including Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI without relying entirely on its own in-house models.

At the same time, Apple continues emphasizing privacy, on-device processing, and security as key differentiators in its AI roadmap.

For now, however, the Siri lawsuit settlement remains confirmed fact, while the broader iOS 27 AI framework remains an unannounced and developing report.
