Amazon To Invest $10bn In UK To Boost Data Centers And More
Updated on Thu, Sep 12, 2024
This has called for cloud infrastructure providers to enable powerful data center services capable of serving customers with a platform to design, develop and host AI and generative AI applications, which includes scaling and upgrading their offerings.
In this regard, Amazon’s cloud computing division Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to enhance its offerings in the United Kingdom with a significant investment.
So, what did the company reveal about its latest move and how will it help its customers? Let’s explore!
What Is Amazon’s Investment In UK About?
-
Through a news release published on its website, Amazon announced that AWS plans to invest £8 billion or around $10.46 million in the UK over the next five years (2024-2028).
-
The investment will be directed toward building, operating and maintaining data centers.
-
It will boost the company’s long-term commitment to supporting growth and productivity and will help contribute £14 billion ($18 billion) to the UK's total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through to 2028.
-
Additionally, it will support over 14,000 full-time jobs annually at local UK businesses, which form a part of the AWS data center supply chain, spanning construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications and more.
-
The move adds to AWS’ previous investment of over £3 billion (around $4 billion) from 2020-2023, which has supported around 6,000 FTE jobs in local businesses.
-
This also adds to numerous moves made by AWS to enhance the digital skills of the UK’s workforce through training programs, such as AWS Educate, AWS Academy and AWS re/Start.
-
It also offers a free training program, AWS Skill Builder, which provides them with access to over 600 free, on-demand courses in 14 different languages.
How Will The Investment Help AWS Customers?
-
AWS’ services are used by a wide range of businesses, including startups, SMBs, large enterprises, government agencies and others. Notable customers include AstraZeneca, Cancer Research UK, Deliveroo, easyJet, Natural History Museum, NatWest Group, The Very Group, UK Biobank, Zilch and more.
-
The investment towards enhancing AWS’ data centers will help organizations in the UK take full advantage of the growing benefits of cloud computing, AI and GenAI.
-
As cloud computing enables startups and small businesses to leverage the same tools and technologies that large enterprises use, AWS’ enhancements will help them lower costs, improve energy efficiency, boost sustainability, become more agile and innovate faster while driving innovation faster to compete on a global stage.
-
In a study commissioned by AWS and carried out by independent consultancy firm Public First, it was found that 84% of responding AWS customers believe their business has saved money by investing in cloud infrastructure.
-
The study also revealed that AWS infrastructure helps them reduce the deployment time of new software by 27%.
-
In totality, Amazon has made direct investments of over £56 billion or $73 billion in the UK between 2010 and 2022 and currently employs 75,000 people in the region, across more than 100 sites, which includes over 25 UK fulfillment centers and corporate offices in six cities.
-
“We will continue to push the boundaries of how technology – digital infrastructure and services – can help our customers and partners to innovate, scale, and boost growth and productivity across the UK.”
What Did UK Government Officials Say?
-
Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said, “This £8 billion Amazon Web Services investment marks the start of the economic revival and shows Britain is a place to do business. I welcome the announcement as part of the Government’s mission to boost growth, unlock investment and make every part of Britain better off.”
-
Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, said, “Today’s announcement reflects the growing strength of the UK’s digital economy with a key player like Amazon Web Services committing to growing and expanding on our shores.”
-
[Contd.] “As Technology Secretary, I am committed to supporting digital advancement so that it can improve lives and livelihoods for the better. From increasing compute power to providing access to AI – it is vital that innovators have the infrastructure they need to grow our digital economy and drive breakthroughs.”
What Did Amazon Executives Say?
-
Tanuja Randery, Vice President and Managing Director, Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) at AWS, said, “The next few years could be among the most pivotal for the UK’s digital and economic future, as organizations of all sizes across the country increasingly embrace technologies like cloud computing and AI to help them accelerate innovation, increase productivity, and compete on the global stage.”
-
[Contd.] “We’re proud to announce our plans to invest £8 billion in digital and AI infrastructure over the next five years to help meet the growing needs of our customers and partners, and support the transformation of the UK's digital economy.”
