All About Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked Event

At CES 2025 Samsung exhibited a wide range of new products that wowed and dazzled attendees. This included its QN90F, a 115-inch TV that came with its glare-free display technology, along with a handful of other TVs.

However, Samsung’s biggest reveal came a day prior to the official opening of the world’s biggest consumer electronics show, on a day that’s dedicated to big tech companies announcing their new plans, products, and partnerships—CES’s Media Day.

Nestled among Samsung’s announcements of a range of AI PCs and its Vision AI enhancements, sat a nugget of information about its flagship smartphone series, its Galaxy series. That particular nugget only contained one update—the new Galaxy S25 phone series will be unveiled at Samsung’s Unpacked event on January 22, which transpired yesterday.

The event opened with a video of Samsung Electronics’ President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business TM Roh getting ready to begin the event, offset to a voiceover that sounded suspiciously close to Paul Bettany's Jarvis from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At the end of the event, when the credits were rolling, it was confirmed that the voiceover was, in fact, Paul Bettany.

Either way, TM Roh came onstage and wasted no time in revealing the new Galaxy S25 series and its new operating system—One UI 7—which was custom-built to power highly personalized artificial intelligence (AI) features through its dedicated Galaxy AI from the ground up.

“The greatest innovations are a reflection of their users, which is why we evolved Galaxy AI to help everyone interact with their devices more naturally and effortlessly while trusting that their privacy is secured,” said TM Roh. “Galaxy S25 series opens the door to an AI-integrated OS that fundamentally shifts how we use technology and how we live our lives.”

Samsung Galaxy S25

Samsung’s new smartphone series comes in 3 primary options: Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra. The smartphones will be available on February 7 but can be pre-ordered now.

All three variants are powered by a first-of-its-kind customized Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset built especially to deliver Galaxy’s most powerful performance ever, with on-device processing power for Galaxy AI.

It helps deliver a performance boost of 40% in NPU (Neural Processing Unit), 37% in CPU (Central Processing Unit), and 30% in GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) compared to the previous generation. It’s also equipped with Vulkan Engine and improved Ray Tracing for smoother and more realistic mobile gaming, which is kept cool with a 40% larger vapor chamber and a tailored thermal interface material (TIM).

All three phones offer the same features for the most part, save camera capabilities, storage, memory, screen size, battery size, and pricing.

Of course, the Galaxy S25 Ultra is the most powerful of the lot, and it comes with five cameras; a 12MP selfie camera, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, a 200MP wide-angle camera with 2x optical quality zoom, a 10MP Telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 50MP Telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and 10x optical quality zoom.

Housed in a strong titanium frame, users of the S25 Ultra can pick between 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of storage with 12GB RAM and a 6.9-inch main screen that’s reinforced with the durable Corning Gorilla Armor 2 display glass.

The S25 comes wrapped in a light aluminum frame and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and brings the options of 128/256/512GB ROM while the S25+ offers 256/512GB, where both come with 12GB RAM. However, the S25 brings a 6.2-inch FHD screen versus the S25+’s 6.7-inch QHD+ screen.

As for colors, the Galaxy S25 Ultra will be available in Titanium Silverblue, Titanium Black, Titanium Whitesilver and Titanium Gray. Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ will be available in Navy, Silver Shadow, Icyblue and Mint.

Samsung Galaxy S25 AI Features

When it comes to AI features, the series offers tools that make a true AI companion that understands a user’s context and preferences to offer personalized experiences across text, images, video, and more. The devices have reimagined Android with AI at the core, integrating AI into all touchpoints, regardless of which app you use.

As such, Google has partnered with Samsung to offer customizable multimodal agents for various tasks, while also enhancing its Circle to Search, which can now recognize phone numbers, email IDs, and URLs allowing users to call, email, and visit websites quickly.

It also lets them find music and song names without having to open another app. Further enforcing speedy AI is the phone’s side button, which just needs to be pressed and held to activate Google’s Gemini.

The partnership also brings Gemini Live exclusively to users of the Galaxy S25, which allows them to have a natural, free-flowing conversation in up to 2 languages in real-time, along with 6 months of Gemini Advanced and 2TB of storage space for free.

Of course, the phones come with Call Transcript for call summaries, Writing Assist for summarizing content, selecting text from images, and automatically preparing notes, as well as Drawing Assist that can bring ideas to life through sketches, text, or image prompts. This also extends to personalized shopping tips, cooking tips, and more.

Users can also exploit AI-powered screen sharing and live video streaming to enjoy better, quicker, and more contextual experiences while they’re using the device.

The series also comes with Personal Data Engine, which enables personalized AI features by locally processing data to deliver tailored experiences. This means that users don’t need to exchange private data through the cloud, which can instead be kept safe and secure, protected by Samsung’s Knox Vault. Galaxy S25 also introduces post-quantum cryptography, safeguarding personal data against emerging threats that could increase as quantum computing evolves.

Samsung brings the power of AI to enhance photography and videography through its Portrait, Filters, and Nightography enhancements. Nightography helps differentiate between the moving and still parts in videos.

Speaking about security, Samsung is also introducing Content Credentials for AI-generated content, which is developed with Adobe and the C2PA and is used for authenticity and transparency.

One of the newer and more interesting features is Now Brief, which offers suggestions accessible via Now Bar. Users can get quick updates, live scores, suggestions, and more on the lock screen itself.

Samsung didn’t forget about all-round well-being, bringing in AI-powered tools such as vascular load indicator, antioxidant index, health tracking, mindfulness, and other features through Samsung Health.

Samsung users can leverage SmartThings to transform their home and daily lives with personalized experiences. This also allows them to automatically deploy robotic vacuum cleaners and operate other machines.

Other Reveals

The S25 series had one more phone that wasn’t spoken about but was teased—the Galaxy S25 Edge—a surprisingly ultra-slim smartphone that’s believed to be just 6.4mm thick (the regular Galaxy S25 is 7.2mm). There remains no pre-order or release date for this phone or pricing details.

While it isn’t the first time this device has been displayed, Samsung’s first Android XR (eXtended Reality) headset—Project Moohan—made its way to the Unpacked event. It is one of the first times the headset has been pictured though. The device has been developed in partnership with Google.
