A Sneak Peek Into OpenAI’s Response To Elon Musk's Lawsuit!

Welcome to another edition of the latest edition of the fast-paced realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), where recently the drama unfolded as OpenAI issued a bold response to the lawsuit filed by none other than Elon Musk!
Well, Musk's allegations were against the organization's CEO - Sam Altman and President - Greg Brockman and centered on breaches of contract, fiduciary duty and unfair competition. These allegations eventually accused OpenAI of prioritizing profit over its responsibility to safeguard the public's interests while developing artificial general intelligence (AGI).
OpenAI which was recently in the headlines for introducing a new ‘read-aloud’ feature for its users; didn't shy away from the confrontation, providing evidence in the form of email exchanges between Musk, Altman, Brockman and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever.
What Did The Emails Say?

Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever clarified that while the organization's name suggests openness, it doesn't necessarily imply open-source principles. “As we get closer to building AI,” Sutskever wrote, “it will make sense to start being less open.” Sutskever further emphasized that as AI development progresses, a shift towards less openness might become sensible, although the ultimate goal is to ensure everyone benefits from AI advancements.

According to OpenAI’s blog, Elon Musk concurred with Sutskever's stance, indicating his support for the notion that AI need not be open-sourced. His brief response of "Yup" echoed the sentiment that certain aspects of AI development could warrant confidentiality.

Musk proposed attaching OpenAI to Tesla as a financial lifeline, acknowledging the financial challenges faced by OpenAI. He suggested leveraging Tesla's resources to bolster OpenAI's funding, notwithstanding recognizing the daunting task of competing with tech giants like Google.

Despite OpenAI's nonprofit status, discussions about transitioning to a for-profit model date back to 2018. The emails revealed considerations about sustainability and revenue generation, with Tesla emerging as a potential partner to fuel AI research.
