What Is Telecine (TK)?

TechDogs Avatar

Telecine is the procedure of converting motion picture film into video. It helps us watch our favorite movies with standard video devices, like televisions and computers. When telecine first came out, it only dealt with film-to-video conversion. Now that digital televisions are more popular than ever, sampling algorithms are used in those devices, including frame rate conversion, ascend and deinterlacing. Telecine can reframe the shots in a scene so that you can see things differently. With the advent of scanners, telecine has become less prevalent than it used to be because they can do everything that telecines do without using one machine for each shot change. However, if you're looking for an alternative way to convert your favorite movie scenes into something new, you should consider using a scanner! It's a complex procedure that requires precise timing because if you're not careful, all your hard work will be for naught. The first step is to capture every movie frame at 16 frames per second. If you don't do this, you won't be able to store all the information in each frame—and that means you'll miss some of the details of your film! The next step is to adjust your video speed from 25-30 fps to 16/18 fps using a pulldown process. It will ensure that everything syncs up perfectly when you transfer it to video! Now that everything has been set up correctly, it's time to start recording! Wait—did we mention that telecine was complex? Well, it gets even more complicated now: You can't just record at average speed and then slow down the footage later on—if you do that, everything will be out of sync again! So instead, we use an inverse-telecine technique where everything is played back at 25-30 fps and then slowed down afterward, so it matches our video speed perfectly!
