What Is Storage Optimization?
When you think about it, the word "storage" is a pretty straightforward one. It's just… stuff you keep for later, right? Well, No! There's a lot more to it than that. Storage optimization is a broad concept that works across all the technological and management layers to ensure existing storage resources are working efficiently and cost-effectively. It is the process of ensuring that your storage infrastructure is working as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. This can be achieved through various technologies, frameworks and techniques that work across the entire storage management stack. It's important to note that there are different kinds of optimization: hardware-based and software-based. Hardware-based optimization is when you add more memory or CPU power to your server; software-based optimization involves optimizing the filesystem. Storage optimization ensures you're using the least amount of storage space possible. While that might seem like a no-brainer, it's pretty easy to get caught up in the moment and start storing things you don't need. What happens when you're trying to optimize your storage? It would be best to consider what's out there and what's not. When looking at your data, it's essential to ask yourself: "Do I need this?" if so, how much? Once you've figured out what needs to stay and what can go, you'll want to look at how much space each file takes up on your system. This is where data classification comes into play: You'll want to classify each file based on its type and size so that they can be organized into groups by category and size. This will allow you to see which groups are taking up the most storage space on your system and which aren't using enough! Then comes virtualization: Once all your files have been classified and categorized by type/size/category/etc., then it's time for them all.
