What Is Hardware Security Module (HSM)?
Imagine a world where your computer can't be hacked. That's the world of a hardware security module (HSM), a cryptographic processor that generates and stores cryptographic keys, providing secure access to data and transactions. The module also offers accelerated cryptographic operations employing these keys by performing encryption, decryption and authentication for various applications. The HSM is physically isolated, like smart cards and back tapes. Still, it offers greater security because it doesn't have an operating system and is thus virtually invulnerable to attacks over a network. When choosing a security solution for your business, you must look beyond the obvious. If implemented correctly, an OS-based security solution (like Windows or macOS) can do wonders for your company's digital infrastructure. What if it isn't? What if there's a glitch in the system? What if an unauthorized user can break through and access your company's data? That's why hardware security modules are such a good idea. They don't have an operating system—they're physically attached to the device they serve, like a network card or PCI plugin card. They protect against internal and external intruders using two-factor authentication. OS-based solutions are less susceptible to corruption and system failures. A hardware security module is like a watchdog—it doesn't bark unless something is wrong with your company's digital infrastructure. When you hear a dog barking, you know something has gone awry. When you hear a hardware security module chirp, you know the same thing. Unlike dogs, which are often annoying and sometimes dangerous, HSM can help keep your company secured and running smoothly! Having an HSM watching over your digital infrastructure 24/7 will ensure everything works as expected. If something goes wrong, it'll let you know immediately so that you can take action before things get out of hand.
