Grinding refers to the playing time spent doing repetitive tasks within a game to unlock a particular game item or build the experience needed to progress smoothly through the game. Grinding most commonly involves killing the same set of opponents over and over to gain experience points or gold. Although other game genres require some rubbing, role-playing games (RPGs) – specifically massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMOs) – are notorious for needing this type of time investment from players. Grinding can benefit the player by giving them something to do while waiting for friends to log on or for an event to start. It can also help further the game's story by providing the player with a task that may lead to discovering something new about their character or the world they inhabit. Grinding can be fun if it's something that players enjoy doing. For example, collecting resources in a strategy game can be tedious and monotonous. Still, if players want the strategy of the game and the process of managing resources, it can be something they look forward to doing.
