What Is Encoding?
The information you provide to your computer is translated into a form similar to a secret code by using encoding. It's much like when you were younger, and you had a private journal that you could only access with a lock and key. The information was contained within the diary, while the lock served as the encoding mechanism, and the key served as the decoder. A computer requires the appropriate decoder to read the information you give it in the same way you need the key to read your diary. The process of taking information and transforming it into a language that computers can understand is called encoding. Your thoughts and ideas are being translated into computer language. Encodings can be broken down into component parts, much like numerous dialects spoken across the globe. Encodings include the likes of UTF-8, UTF-16, and ASCII, to name a few examples. UTF-8 is comparable to Esperanto in the realm of encoding since it is a universal language that most computers can comprehend. UTF-16 is analogous to an elitist dialect-specific computer speak; it can accommodate many characters but is not as widely utilized. The American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) is a character encoding that has been around for a long time. It is straightforward, although it does not support as many characters as other encodings. The process of encoding something, such as a piece of text, involves converting the letters, numbers, and symbols that make up the text into a string of integers. Encoding can be used for a variety of purposes. Computers have a much greater understanding of numerical values than letters and symbols. Therefore, the encoding serves as a Rosetta Stone, converting human language into the language computers understand. And if it is necessary for the computer to show that text once more, it will utilize a decoder to convert the numbers back into the letters and symbols they represent. As defined, encoding is translating human language into computer language, and the computer must have the ability to correctly interpret the information.
