What Is Collaboration Data Objects (CDO)?
If you're a developer, you know that the world is complicated and if you're a developer who's trying to build code for Microsoft Outlook and Exchange, it's downright confusing. Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) is an API built into Microsoft Server products that provide access to the global address list, mailbox content, public folders, and other server objects related to messaging and Microsoft Outlook. MS Outlook may not be directly programmed with added functionality using CDO. CDO is designed to make it easier for developers to build applications that interact with the server-side infrastructure of Exchange Server and Outlook Web Access (OWA). It provides access to these services through an object model similar in many ways to Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI). While Microsoft Outlook is good at creating, manipulating and sending internet messages, it doesn't give developers the convenient way to do so that Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) does. Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) is a library that allows developers to create, manipulate and send internet messages. It's not possible with applications such as Microsoft Outlook. If you've ever sent an attachment in an email, you've probably wondered if it was possible to get it into another application. Well, we've got good news for you! CDO is a set of libraries that allows you to do just that. CDO stands for Component Object Model Data Objects—and it's a way to access the contents of public folders and mailboxes from any application using the CDO API. You can use CDO through two different libraries: CDONTS and CDOSYS. Both versions support direct access to public folders and mailbox contents for any application using the CDO API to communicate with the mailbox. They can easily handle email attachments, group lists and schedules, which may all be transparently transported across applications. It's easy to get started with CDO: download one of these libraries and try it out!
