What Is Bit Rate (BR)?
Bit Rate (BR) is essential when thinking about how fast your data is going. Bit rate is usually measured in seconds, ranging from bps for smaller values to kbps and Mbps. Bit rate, as you may have guessed, is a measurement of how much data is processed or transferred over a certain period. It's measured in bits per second (bps), which can be converted to kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). "bit" refers to the binary digit, either 0 or 1. A bit rate is calculated by multiplying the number of bits per second by eight and dividing that by 1000. So if you're transferring a file at 100 kbps, you'll transfer 8 megabytes every second. The term bit rate refers to the per-second data measurement that passes through a communications network. In this context, the bit rate is synonymous with the data transfer rate (DTR). To understand what bit rate means, it's essential to understand that bits are the smallest unit of digital information. Bits can be either 1 or 0—they're binary digits. When a computer sends information over a network, it divides the 1s and 0s into packets, which are sent out one after another at high speed. The data sent in each box is measured in bits per second (bps), or for short. So if you want to know how fast your internet connection is, you could ask yourself how many bits are being transferred per second by your router or modem. That number would be your "b" in bps. Bit rate measures how much data is transmitted in a given time. In multimedia, it's most often used to describe the data needed to encode audio or video. As you might guess from the name, bit rate has something to do with bits—not just old bits. They're particular kinds of bits called "compression bits. " These are the ones that let us squeeze audio and video into smaller files than we could if we kept all those uncompressed recordings around forever. The more compression bits you use, the better quality your encoded file will be—but you'll also need more storage space (or longer download times) for it.
