Overview
If you said the world of media and entertainment, 10 points to Gryffindor! Yes, the face of entertainment keeps changing with every blink of an eye. Some days entertainment is the FIFA World Cup, on other days, it is the Grammy Awards!
To ensure that the media and entertainment industry doesn't falter in keeping up with our entertainment needs (and we have a lot of them!), it leverages technology to provide better avenues for our engagement. That's why, for everyone even remotely linked to this industry (who isn't!), we've got the top 5 Media and Entertainment Technology trends for 2022!

What keeps you going on the good days? Well, of course, it's the happiness and support of your loved ones, successful relationships, personal and professional growth. However, when we have rough days, what makes it a little bit better? Watching a fine movie, swaying to your favorite melodious tune, or binging a comedy podcast till your sides ache!
As Mr. Keating (Robin Williams from Dead Poets Society!) had put it, "But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for." Media and entertainment make our life fun, enjoyable and exciting – especially on the bad days! You could be an eSports fan or a Potterhead, you could like indie music or enjoy heavy rock and roll - media and entertainment is always going to be a part of your life in various forms.
More importantly, to make entertainment relevant and rocking, we use the power of technology. Recently we have made movies in 3D, turned esports championships into real-time tournaments, converted live concerts into virtual shows and brought the fun to our homes when we can't make it to the theatres. #TheStoryOf2021
Invariably, you must be wondering what amazing combinations of Media & Entertainment Technology are in store in the future? (Can they make a real Hogwarts please!) Well, we are not sure about the "real school of magic" but we do know what the year ahead looks like for Media and Entertainment Technology. So, here are the top Media and Entertainment Technology trends for 2022 for you to binge on.
Let the feast begin!
Trend 1: Artificial Intelligence Will Make Your Entertainment Automated

Imagine Netflix without the "Because you watched" or "Recommendations for you" section – how would you know what to watch next? How are you supposed to spend hours browsing through recommendations next instead of actually watching something – just kidding!
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought in the age of recommendations in the media and entertainment industry. So much so, that we're used to having our favorite OTT platforms recommend shows and movies to watch next. In fact, Netflix has admitted 80% of its content delivery is achieved through recommendations. We're sure that Netflix as well as other streaming and entertainment providers will work on personalizing their recommendations ever more throughout 2022. Hence, media businesses will invest heavily in recommendation systems and automation technologies to help users find content that's valuable to them much quicker.
Not just that, Artificial Intelligence also comes in handy for voice recognition in Media and Entertainment Technology applications. Hey Alexa, play Baby by Justin Bieber! Yes, that's roughly the time when AI made its entry into the media industry! Today, you can play any movie, find any episode or add any series to your favorites list by simply using your voice. This year, Media and Entertainment Technology will work to make voice commands more effective while adding more voice-based features to help you get entertainment at your command instantly.
TechDogs' Opinion: Apart from voice recognition technology and recommendations, this year, we are rooting for media automation to come to the forefront with Artificial Intelligence. What's media automation, you ask? Well, surely you have seen those Netflix previews and the new Fast Laughs section. There's no Big Brother behind a screen, sitting there and picking these snippets for you - it's Artificial Intelligence at work. We predict this trend will expand to other media as well – songs, reels, playlists – you name it and it will be recommended to you based on your previous interactions.
Moreover, by leveraging Artificial Intelligence, media streaming platforms will be able to track that you are more into romantic comedies than action thrillers. Then, from the latest movies and TV series on the platform, an AI-based algorithm can pick up the scenes that have romantic scenes over action sequences and pitch them to you. This will help in improving the conversion of consumers by catering to their unique preferences. Quite simple, right? #AIMakesItAllEasy
Trend 2: Entertainment Will Happen Within The Metaverse

Do you have a Gen-Z person around you right now? Well, go ahead and ask them about the concerts by Ariana Grande and Bruno Mars that took place last year inside the online game Fortnite. Well, the response surely must have been about how epic the event was! For the Millennials and Boomers out there (and those who do not have a Gen-Z person handy!), Fortnite is an eSport or online game that conducted a gaming tournament (again, fully virtually) last year. As a part of the event, Bruno and Ariana performed virtually for the crowd present online. Consider this as a trailer for what you can expect in 2022!
This year, as the Metaverse (a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connections), comes closer to reality, you would find more entertainment happening within this virtual universe. Shared and remote entertainment experiences have been in demand ever since co-viewing became a trend last year. That's why you can already have a "watch party" on Hulu and Disney Plus. However, that's just old entertainment shipped in new packaging and we want new things, right?
Now is the time that the Metaverse will find newer avenues of entertainment for you. A little birdie tells us that Disney is already planning a Metaverse theme park for you soon! We would not be surprised to find even more entertainment formats happening exclusively in virtual environments. #LookingForwardToMetaverseParty
TechDogs' Opinion: We believe that Metaverse has the potential to bring together media, entertainment and Ecommerce like no other. The Metaverse will empower the use of shoppable media channels merging the shopping aspect with entertainment in the Metaverse. Allow us to explain!
Gen-Z today wants their brands to be where they are - usually in one of the Metaverses - be it eSports, social media, online communities, or video games. As additional entertainment channels enter the Metaverse, it will also bring in more opportunities for brands to market to the audience there.
This exclusive performance by Adele in the Metaverse is brought to you by...
Imagine yourself watching a 3D movie in the Metaverse and then being able to purchase the movie's accessories and digital collectibles right from there. Yes, we believe that is totally possible with the Metaverse! With more businesses integrating with Web 3.0 platforms, we expect virtual events and brand collaborations to increase, creating new media and entertainment avenues for consumers in the Metaverse.
Trend 3: Media Will Be Sold As NFTs (Non-fungible Tokens)

Have you heard the term NFT (Non-fungible Tokens) yet? Did you think they were limited to the world of FinTech? Hail the advent of NFTs - this blockchain-dwelling certificates that record ownership of digital assets will soon be used in the media and entertainment industry too! You might have already heard of Elon Musk's partner Grimes' digital art collection that sold for roughly $6 million. Or perhaps Linkin Park's single that was auctioned on a blockchain-backed site for nearly $30,000. These are just the first baby steps of NFTs making waves in the Media and Entertainment Technology circles. This trend is making digital media more accessible to fans in a revolutionary manner.
In the year ahead, we would find more such digital media reaching the fans via the blockchain network. In fact, it is rumored that Rick and Morty's creator Dan Harmon's new show, Krapopolis, will be curated entirely on blockchain, featuring its own marketplace for trading NFTs based on the show. The NFT marketplace will allow the media industry and technologists to produce offerings that allow fans and audiences to engage digitally with their favorite characters, shows and movies. We're sure that NFTs would become the new-age autographs to record celebrity encounters! #HowCoolIsThatMorty
TechDogs' Opinion: While on one hand NFTs will definitely expand the marketplace and the sources of income for the media industry, we are also awaiting businesses to start evaluating their digital content and resources. Confused? Let us break this trend down for you!
Right now, the worth of a new movie project is dependent on the cast, their fan following, the production studio, their recent flicks, etc. We would not be surprised if soon enough, the movie's NFTs and the value they are sold at also attribute to the market value of the franchise. The digital media asset's worth would in fact be part of promotions and sales because NFTs will connect to their fans directly, who will be able to purchase the unique NFTs for that movie.
We also believe that in the future, media companies would possibly generate royalty income not only from movies, shows and reruns but the secondary sales of NFTs in the Metaverse. #WeAreNotKidding
Trend 4: The Creator Economy Will Take Over Traditional Show Business
One of the best things about technology is that it is very empowering. That's why we at TechDogs love all things tech! It is technology that has empowered the creator economy beyond the mainstream media and we're glad to see community-driven, personalized media content finding its way to virality through innovative technology and social media platforms. #WeSupportNewTalent
Technology has brought in the era of reels and taken media and entertainment to platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Twitch where younger new-age celebs and stars going by the name of 'influencers’ dominate. Moving ahead, these content creators with their short, engaging videos will take over content-driven platforms to become highly popular and amass a greater following. This is thanks to innovative content channels and media technologies to interact with their audience - and no we are not talking exclusively about Instagram Live!
Just to put things in perspective, at present there are more than 50 million independent content creators, curators and community builders fuelling the creator economy. This ecosystem is valued at $20 billion with estimations that it could grow to a $104.2 billion market this year! That makes it a major Media and Entertainment Technology trend for 2022!
TechDogs' Opinion: When we say content-driven platforms, we're not limited to social media but platforms such as Patreon, which has paid double the amount to original content creators last year (from $1 billion in 2020 to $2 billion in 2021). We are sure local, customized content that's relatable will keep growing and reaching audiences, increasingly bypassing the traditional media networks and streaming platforms. #ContentPlatformsForTheWin
At present, creators have all the tools at their disposal to create high-quality content and engage their target audience. We bet that brands will also increasingly favor this creator economy that's "hyper-creative, hyper-local and hyper-talented." We mean, individuals are creating more relevant content than ever before – just think of all the instant memes that flood social media each day – that's the creators in action!
This trend will even allow brands to find more relevant collaborators and influencers in even the smallest niches, which will enable better outreach. We also expect the creator economy to define "what’s hot and what’s not” in the world of entertainment through their decision-making power on the Internet.
Trend 5: Social Media 2.0 Will Revolutionize Media Delivery
Where do you get your news first? Twitter feed or your favorite news channel? Okay, let us rephrase that. Don’t you eagerly await those Twitter and Instagram polls filling up social media platforms as soon as a new tournament or TV series begins? From Academy Awards predictions to the FIFA World Cup draws, entertainment events are no longer fun without live social media updates. That’s what social media 2.0 is about to bring!
You can think of social media 2.0 as the revolutionary new-age social media competitors that would overcome the shortcomings of traditional media. Right from data privacy concerns to fake news and dissemination of misinformation, we will see social media 2.0 be more secure, streamlined and filtered. That’s why even the most credible news media channels (including CNN, Fox News and even Forbes) are churning out bite-sized content that is relevant to social media 2.0 platforms and can be used on YouTube, TikTok, or Twitter.
Social media 2.0 will always enable the media and entertainment sector to reach the audience faster, in newer forms and become more interactive than ever before. Using polls and live updates, social media 2.0 will ensure that media content delivery will not be unidirectional anymore! Sounds awesome, right?
TechDogs’ Opinion: One of the key revolutions in social media 2.0 is that we are expecting the monetization of social media content. (Don’t worry!) So far, social media activity is free. As an attempt to make things more transparent, you might be charged a simple fee to subscribe to your favorite creator, follow your favorite influencer and check out your favorite stand-up comedy show. This will in turn boost the creator economy (yes, the one we just talked about in Trend 4!) as more creators will try to create relevant content and gain more subscribers and followers.
We’re already seeing Twitch do this where it charges you to subscribe to your favorite channels - other platforms will soon follow suit to allow the social media 2.0 ecosystem to grow. However, in order to use social media 2.0 to your advantage, businesses will need to develop a responsive approach to create and post content in real-time to be relevant. Moreover, brands will need to leverage interactive social media tools to transform media and content delivery to consumers. This will form the core of social media 2.0 for media businesses in 2022.
