Overview

What was the last book you read? Wait, not much of a reader? Let us rephrase. When was the last time you were upskilled, took a course, or casually read an article to learn about something new? Recently, right? How did you go about it? Got yourself a home tutor or attended some night school? We bet not.

Education and the way it's imparted are changing constantly. Learning institutes and training centers are rapidly trying to keep up with these changes. At the same time, they are also evolving to explore newer ways of leveraging technology for education. Education Technology is increasingly becoming integral to primary, secondary and higher education as well as professional training. (Yes - the one that helps your employees to grow!)

Businesses must invest in EdTech to make sure their talent is not only at par with the best in the market but also to keep this talent (your employees, duh!) engaged. So, where should you invest? How is the world of learning changing? Fret not, we come bearing answers. Read on to discover the top Education Technology trends that you should watch out for in 2022!

Let the class begin!
Techdogs-Where's The Scale Tilting This Year?-"Top Trends 2022 – Education Technology"
Before we begin, let's play, would you rather?

If we ask you right now to take notes of this article, would you note it in your diary or just bookmark this for the future with that little star next to the tab on top?

If we ask you to take a zoom session on your learnings from this article for your team, would you just make a ppt or use a green board and teach them with chalk?

In short, would you rather do it the tech way or the traditional way?

We're not even going to bother with your answer because, let's face it, we all will go the tech way. Except for some of those 90s kids who still love pencils and paper, chalks and dusters and raise their hands taller than Hermione Granger to ask questions! #ThatsNostalgiaNotLogic

All said and done, learning the new way (read: tech way) is more fun, more flexible and more interactive. No one wants to dig into a thousand-page book. Everyone just wants to "skip to the good part" and watch a quick video about it!

Last year, we saw trends such as E-Learning, Immersive Learning and Gamification change the face of EdTech. Without much ado, let's look at some of the top Education Technology trends for 2022 that can tell you how learners wish to learn this year.

Buckle up and enjoy this exciting ride!

Trend 1: Mobile Applications Will Let You Learn On The Go

TechDogs-"Trend 1: Mobile Applications Will Let You Learn On The Go"-If You Could Me Talking About How We Need A Mobile App For Education.
Let's face it - we need everything on our mobiles these days. From our favorite streaming applications to Esports & Ecommerce, whatever we discover on the web, our first question always is, "Hey, is there a mobile app for that?"

Learning technology too cannot be left unscathed with this love for "all things mobile." Mobile applications will take over and help teachers become more efficient at tasks like content development, reporting and grading evaluation going ahead - thanks to all the accessibility and flexibility they provide! #LearnOnTheGo

The education sector has already been aware of this technology trend and those who did not know about it after there were 470 million downloads of educational apps on the App Store and 466 million on Google Play in 2021, according to Statista - and for a good reason. After all, research states that 71% of millennials feel more engaged in mobile learning as compared to formal methods of education or learning through desktops. Learning is going mobile!

TechDogs' Opinion: We believe that going mobile will open a plethora of possibilities for the EdTech industry. We all already know how gamification, communication and learning become way more flexible when you switch to a mobile. Ask any Ecommerce app, really - they dealt with a lot of mess before the app came into the picture.

With EdTech apps gaining popularity, managing student data, integrating with chatbots, tracking student progress, taking calls - everything would become way more flexible and real-time. There's more - mobile apps would also allow learners to leverage more mediums to upskill and train. For instance, imagine working on your next presentation and listening to a podcast for your online course simultaneously. #MultitaskingIsEmpowering

Trend 2: Augmented Reality/ Virtual Reality Will Make Learning Experiential!

TechDogs-"Trend 2: Augmented Reality/ Virtual Reality Will Make Learning Experiential!"-Tuxedo Pooh Meme Comparing Traditional Learning With Ar/Vr Driven Learning.
Augmented Reality (AR) is already leading the Metaverse revolution and it has made its way into ed tech as well! With the help of Augmented Reality, teachers would be able to expand the physical world and learners can see beyond the four walls of classrooms. Much like Marauder's Map but better! You cannot not just see the secret pathways to Hogsmeade but also experience it all right from Hogwarts castle! #ImmersiveLearning

The perfect medley of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (VR) can empower teachers across the learning spectrum (primary, secondary and business level - duh!) to experiment with their pedagogy and create learning experiences that enhance memory retention among students. #NoMoreBoringLectures

Wait - are you imagining people learning about the solar system or dinosaurs (for the Ross in you!) via AR/ VR? How stereotypical! Think beyond - studies suggest that AR and VR won't be limited to specific classroom units but they'll become part of learning and delivering the lessons in general. After all, businesses plan to spend $12.6 billion on advanced technology in education by 2025! Where do you think the money would go? The popular always get the best investments and we know AR is the most popular tech off late!

TechDogs' Opinion: First, let's start with the obvious - AR will allow students to learn through an interactive, 3D environment. Classrooms will become learning labs and training sessions will become hands-on interactive spaces. We believe that's just the tip of the iceberg, though! Apart from the entire engagement and interactivity that AR/ VR brings, it also increases the accessibility of learning.

First of all, a lot of learning or training visits that were impossible due to logistics and cost (and the pandemic!) will now become feasible and doable - so more learners will get access to it. Secondly, it would open a new world of learning for special education pupils. Trainers and teachers would be able to leverage the gamification element of augmented reality! What's easier for them to do? Play a game or memorize a concept?

Trend 3: MOOCs Will Make Learning Flexible And Accessible

TechDogs-"Trend 3 – MOOCs Will Make Learning Flexible And Accessible"-The Legendary Success Kid Meme That Says Got A Degree In Data Science Without Going To College
Wait, wait, don't take the trouble of Googling this abbreviation. What are we here for? We'll get to that but we'll want to riddle you more. Earlier, the world of ed tech had a lot of SPOCs! Now is the time for MOOC to take over! Enough with the fun - SPOCs stands for Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs). We're not going to explain what they are (isn't the full form self-explanatory?)

MOOCs are Massive Open Online Courses that take away the infrastructure constraints for institutes and budget constraints for learners. A concept spearheaded by edX (an American massive course provider by Harvard and MIT), Massive Open Online Course refers to giving opportunities to the organizations to offer online courses to all the students across the world, in millions, for free. A report highlights that in 2020, providers launched over 2800 courses, 19 online degrees and 360 micro-credentials as part of their MOOC program. They're probably still tallying the ones for 2021! #TooManyMooCsNow

TechDogs' Opinion: We have been witnessing the popularity of MOOCs for the past few years but the pandemic not only solidified it but also expedited their growth. In fact, from March 2020 to April 2020, enrolments on Coursera (the online MOOC platform we all went to once at least in the past two years!) increased by 640%. MOOCs will offer massive learning opportunities for anyone interested in pursuing a degree, certificate or credential from anywhere in the world. The world would officially become a small place. MOOCs are the best bet for professionals - because they offer remote learning, flexibility and best quality education. The popularity of MOOCs will also push institutes to come up with more micro-courses and professional development certifications that allow upskilling and carving career pathways more flexibly and quickly.

Trend 4: Learning Will Get More Interactive – 3D Style!

TechDogs-"Trend 4 – Learning Will Get More Interactive – 3D Style!"-The Popular Unhelpful Teacher Meme That Says “Uses Technology In The Classroom By Showing Movie On The Smartboard”
Have you heard of intelligent classrooms? You might as well get acquainted with them since their market size is estimated to grow by 181,265 million by 2025. The future of learning is intelligent and by that, we mean interactive. Intelligent classrooms are fueled by technology and engaging digital tools to help learners grasp concepts better. You would have smart devices, videos sessions, live mocks - the works. Hang on? That's not new, right? While that's one part of making learning interactive, the EdTech trend for 2022 is that you would see Smart Interactive ebooks now. #TimeToTalkToYourBook

Research shows that the intelligent incorporation of visualization and infographics in the curriculum help learners grasp concepts easily by stimulating imagination. It is observed that 65% of people are visual learners and adding image-based components to your teaching material is an intelligent choice. Smart ebooks are portable and shareable files that have a complete package of audio, animations, quizzes, widgets, interactive questions and polls, making a complete immersive learning set on their own.

TechDogs' Opinion: While there's immense interactivity offered in digital learning; we believe that EdTech can also make offline learning interactive. One of the critical technologies that we are betting on is 3D printing. With life-size 3D models of objects and subject matter topics, students will be able to interact, touch and visualize their learning better, making the entire process more contextual. Much like those textbooks we had as kids, with textures of different materials to help us understand how they are - only way better! It can help learners across industries where engineers can use 3D printing to print out prototypes and architects can print out 3D models of designs to understand what works and what doesn't. #LearningFromMistakes

Trend 5: Artificial Intelligence Will Drive Online Assessments

TechDogs-"Trend 5 – Artificial Intelligence Will Drive Online Assessments"-Serious Owl Used To Show That Ai Proctoring Tools Are Watching You
While much has been said about learning and the learning process, we'd want to cover all bases. With MOOCs and online learning, you have learners across the globe - how do you access their learning? How do you ensure that there are no violations or malpractices in the process and that learners are adequately evaluated?

You could say that there's always the hybrid learning model where exams can be conducted offline - but let's be practical. We need a better way - hail online assessments. Going ahead, you can see a lot more online examinations, especially online proctored examinations (the one where the pupils are watched!) for making sure learning is assessed remotely and yet the evaluation is not compromised.

However, that's just one part of the deal - with these evaluations, you also get a chance to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to personalize tests based on learning levels and competence, evaluate assessments and analyze performance to give real-time feedback to learners. Oh, did we tell you these AI evaluation tools are about 90% faster than manual evaluation? #LesserHassleForInstructors

TechDogs' Opinion: One of the biggest concerns with online assessments has always been their integrity. How do you ensure that there are no unjust means used during it? We think 2022 will address this concern majorly by bringing Online Proctoring Tools and Services into the limelight. These tools bring together the best partnership there can be - AI and Proctors. Together, they make a foolproof assessment environment for online exams. How? At first, AI takes charge and identifies learners with voice and facial recognition.

Then, it creates an environment conducive to assessment by executing browser lockdown technology on the students' devices so that they cannot wander away from the examination tab. Then, they detect all mobile devices nearby and alert the proctor if they're being used. The proctor, on the other hand, uses video monitoring to check for any other violations during the assessment. #ThePerfectPartnership

To Sum Up

Looking at all these Emerging Trends - we can bet that the future of education is smarter, more engaging and definitely more flexible and accessible. We can't wait to see a new world of learners who learn at any age, from anywhere, whenever convenient for them. Each of these technologies - AR/ VR, MOOCs, 3D printing and more. However, Spiderman has also asked us to remind you that with great power comes great responsibility. While leveraging these technologies, we have to keep in mind that they cannot replace educators and their knowledge, just empower their pedagogy - so it's our responsibility to not completely rely on these technologies to teach the learners of tomorrow.
