We always look forward to positive changes that new technological trends bring – probably not surprising given our name! (It’s ‘Tech’Dogs – duh!) What is surprising though, is the rate at which technology evolves and brings about completely unpredictable trends and ideas.
One of the fastest moving technologies in our digital era is automation – we mean, look around, isn’t everything being automated as we speak? As a business, it pays to be aware of the latest offerings in automation and how they can improve your operational effectiveness – or your competitors.
In 2022, as we begin to adjust to the new-normal, automation will be a factor that cannot be ignored. While last year’s top Automation Trends included Robotic Process Automation (RPA), orchestration and hyperautomation among others, this year we have new trends that will change how businesses approach their automation strategies. No wonder, according to a study done by McKinsey, more businesses invested in automation tools compared to any other technology between 2018 and 2020. #StatsDontLie
If you are planning on revamping your automation arsenal, here are the top 5 Automation Technology trends you absolutely cannot ignore in 2022!
Trend 1: Automation Will Enable Businesses To Take The Virtual Leap

Meta – surely, you’ve come across the name recently. The parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp (talk about a digital monopoly!) announced their plans to create a “metaverse” – a virtual world connected by the Internet. Although it sounds a bit too futuristic, digital-first initiatives have been accelerating for some time, aided largely by the COVID-19 crisis. Hence, businesses will have to go back to the drawing board and revamp their traditional processes to provide absolute virtual experiences to the consumers. We absolutely cannot wait to tour Disneyland or attend the Grammys - virtually!
Hold on – what’s metaverse got to do with automation? Automation will allow these businesses to emulate their existing processes in the “metaverse,” rather than redesigning everything from scratch. Organizations across industries will leverage automation to cater virtual services in 2022. Not just that, automation tools will enable them to scale and optimize quickly as the demand for virtual services grows.
Studies are also suggesting that by 2025, 40% of businesses relying on physical interaction will outperform competitors that do not offer paid virtual experiences through fully-automated value chains. Organizations that do not replicate automated activities in the virtual space will be behind the curve and will find it harder to compete in providing top-notch virtual experiences.
TechDogs’ Opinion: We predict that most organizations will rush to create a virtual presence whenever the metaverse goes live. However, in order to quickly replicate existing physical processes and engagement, automation is and will only be the key. Which will help in creating new digital assets (think branded NFTs or non-fungible tokens) to exclusive digital copies of physical goods (like Nike did with their latest sneaker collection!). As a business looking to move into virtual space, automation will be crucial in fully harnessing the potential of the metaverse.
Trend 2: Hyperautomation Is Here To Stay!

Now let’s talk about the trend which retained its place from last year – hyperautomation; and trust us it is here for the long run. For those who missed out, Gartner defines hyperautomation as “an enterprise strategy aimed at automating and transforming as many business and IT processes as possible through Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and the coordination of multiple automation tools.” The term was coined by Gartner in its “Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2020” report, so who better to define it!
Although the term has been around for two years, only a handful of progressive organizations have prioritized hyperautomation initiatives till date. As the recent economic situation has forced organizations to improve operational efficiency, businesses will invest in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Advanced Analytics, etc., and combine it with their existing automation tools.
It is expected that by 2024, most organizations will be able to lower their operational costs through hyperautomation initiatives. Quoting the hyperautomation experts, Gartner predicts that by 2023, organizations will be able to run one in four tasks autonomously using a combination of automation with AI/ ML.
TechDogs’ Opinion: We’re sure that the momentum of digital transformation will remain strong and drive the adoption of advanced technologies and tools. This will enable businesses in automating complex workflows combining automation and emerging technologies. As businesses continue developing more robust automation capabilities, they will inevitably move towards hyperautomation in 2022. If you haven’t already started investing in new-age tools, 2022 is a great year to jump on the bandwagon. One thing businesses need to consider before a complete overhaul is that hyperautomation must be done in a standardized way, since the automation tools deployed across verticals will need to connect and interact at some point.
Trend 3: Welcome The Automation Layer To The Enterprise Stack

Here’s a quiz for you – without looking, could you guess the number of apps on your smartphone? Done? Now, take a look and let us know in the comments how close you were. No cheating, please!
Well, the reason for this exercise was to drive home a point: we use a staggering number of applications every day! The average employee at large enterprises toggles between an average of 170 different applications each year. That’s a lot of time spent switching between applications, causing a huge drain on time and productivity. Surely, there could be a better way!
In 2022, we will see businesses introduce an “automation layer” within their enterprise stacks that will include virtual robots and assistants (think an office version of Siri or Cortana). Soon, these automated assistants - not employees - will be performing repetitive tasks such as copy-pasting information between applications or toggling between different dashboards.
Liana Technologies’ report “The Benefits and Challenges of Marketing Automation” predicts that 40% of marketing organizations will add automation layers to their enterprise stack to improve operational efficiency and develop autonomous processes.
TechDogs’ Opinion: Organizations will soon standardize the "automation layer” within their enterprise technology stack. This will make automated processes more reliable and independent, freeing employees to experiment and explore other tasks. As this automation layer will be deployed with reusable components, employees will be able to access the open-source code to tinker around and explore new methods of accomplishing tasks faster and more efficiently. We expect this to bring about fresher ideas on productivity and operational efficiency.
Hey, Siri, remind me to send the mail before 8 pm and to drink water every two hours...
Trend 4: Semantic Automation Will Transform Robotic Process Automation

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is perhaps the most well-known use-case of automation. Last year we predicted RPA as a top trend for automating business workflows – but here’s a refresher. RPA refers to an application that deploys and manages software bots that simulate human behavior. These bots can independently run rule-driven tasks such as data entry or replying to emails. Pretty cool, right?
However, RPA bots needs step-by-step instructions to perform tasks – the more complex the task, more intricate the code. This is where the uber-cool semantic automation will step in. Bots with semantic automation will be able to simply observe an activity and emulate it without instructions. They will be able to recognize the start and end of the process, what steps are required, where to get the required data, etc.
For example, in a repetitive task such as data entry, semantic automation bots will recognize that the 5-digit numbers in the address field are pin-codes and independently sort the candidates according to their state. Thanks to advances in computer vision and Machine Learning, semantic automation bots will be deployed as soon as this year. UiPath, the market leader in RPA software, has already launched Forms AI, a semantic automation-powered document understanding tool.
TechDogs’ Opinion: Semantic automation will modernize processes as we will no longer have to define stepwise guidelines for new tasks. At TechDogs, we welcome this trend with open arms! These software bots will perform jobs – even without step-by-step guidance and supervision. Tasks that deal with data entry and documentation will be automated system with semantic automation, instead of hiring developers to write code for RPA bots. We’re no mind-readers but semantic automation has the potential to completely revolutionize the content industry!
Trend 5: Automation Will Push Other Verticals To New Heights

The automation industry is going through a boom right now. Consequently, the entire ecosystem surrounding the automation industry — think software and hardware vendors, IT services, robotics engineers, etc., — is experiencing growth. The rapid espousal of automation by the industry will contribute extensively to the development of other verticals too. #GoodGuyAutomation!
The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) reported that the growth of jobs dependent on industrial robots rose on average by 14% every year between 2019 and 2021. Sustaining this growth is impossible without support from ancillary industries - IT services, software solutions providers, hardware vendors, networking specialists, consulting services, etc. In 2022, businesses that rely on heavy automation will start hiring talent to fill these roles. This will create a tremendous demand for automation-related jobs.
TechDogs’ Opinion: The outbreak of the pandemic brought a lot of uncertainties into the business landscape but automation proved to be a reassuring factor. Organizations trusted automation to ensure business continuity - a trend that remains highly unlikely to change. As automation increases in complexity and interoperability, we will see an increase in the demand for automation industry professionals. Businesses will start looking into the emerging talent pool not just to maintain their automation tools and technologies but be aware of the next big thing.
Conclusion
The economic uncertainty of recent times has been a major catalyst for automation. We mean, haven't we all learnt to automatically open Netflix, Reddit or Instagram! Jokes apart, in 2022, we’ll see growth continue across the automation ecosystem. It will help businesses move to the virtual arena. Through hyperautomation and integration within enterprise stacks, automation will improve the business' operational efficiency. The use of semantic automation will be a game-changer, while advances in cloud automation will drive the demand for more automation-related profiles.
