Modernizing Legacy Applications: Strategies and Challenges

About Event
In today's fast-moving technology landscape, companies are faced with the challenge of modernizing their outdated but business-critical legacy applications. This talk will highlight the need and benefits of modernizing such systems to increase efficiency, reduce costs and meet security requirements. Inspired by the ship of Theseus, the question is raised as to how a legacy application (figuratively as an old ship) can be effectively modernized on its journey into the future. We discuss three main approaches to modernization: the Big Bang approach, forced modernization and the Strangler Fig pattern. Each approach is analyzed in terms of its advantages and disadvantages as well as the associated risks and challenges. The talk emphasizes the importance of a systematic, tool-based process for analyzing and transforming applications to minimize business disruption and reduce dependency on key personnel. Finally, a proactive modernization approach is recommended to avoid future crises and enable the integration of new technologies. The lecture invites discussion and exchange of experiences in order to jointly develop effective strategies for modernizing legacy systems.
