Products are getting smarter each year, increasing the ratio of software to hardware components, sub-systems, and the system overall. People from different disciplines must collaborate to make products and systems work reliably. The pressure to improve the innovation cycle is increasingly challenging the market share companies have achieved. The different engineering disciplines involved typically work within their specialized tools: software engineering in the ALM system, electrical engineering in data management tools, and mechanical engineers in their PLM system. The know-how exchange between those silos is often poor, resulting in substantial manual overhead.
